Hi Guys, I have been searching the forum for this topic but could no longer find the comment.
I remember a while ago someone mentioned that they had found a way to fit the BGM177 and still use the Electricstart???

Hello Robbie, do you have the stock Piaggio ignition/flywheel? When I had a BGM 177 on my PX150 with Piaggio flywheel, there was no way that I could keep the starter ring. The transfer ports of the BGM stick out too much.

If "they" did, then "they" will need to tell you how they did it

I run a BGM 177 and I can tell you that the transfers are too wide for a electric start ring.

I *might* be able to fit one now, because I have a 6mm spacer to go with my P200 crank which would lift the transfers up past the starter ring, but that's not a normal thing to do, and definitely not something you can do without a whole bunch of other go-fast parts.

Only way to do is it run a flywheel without the ring gear. I tried to make it work but it eventually broke through and I had to TIG weld up the cylinder and install on another bike.

I thought I had read that someone trimmed down the starter ring teeth, for clearance on a cylinder? Not sure about longevity.

I don't have experience with that 177 kit, so would have just tried to grind down some of the exterior of the cylinder...but it sounds like that won't work with this kit. I did have the same clearance issue with the Pinasco 215 kit on a set of E start 200cc EFL cases. The ring gear was rubbing against the cylinder, but i got away with just grinding down some of the aluminum on the cylinder.

On some top ends (e.g. the DR) you can grind down the lower fins to allow fitting them on a motor with e-start. I've done this loads of times and it's not a big deal at all if you have an angle grinder.

I don't see why you couldn't grind back the teeth, but it'd probably be a LOT of work and, as others have noted, you'd want to make sure that there'd be enough teeth left to still mesh effectively with the starter motor.

I did the same to a Pinasco Magny Cours 177, only the alloy wheel welder did not factor in the heat and warped the base gasket face. The wall of the side transfer just cannot be shaved enough without it weakening. Mine blew as I was giving it some beans in 2nd gear going up a steep hill.

I like Chandlermans 110mm rod/6mm base packer idea. I reckon you would definitely clear the starter ring.

Could you grab say, 1mm by mounting the starter ring a mm further out on the flywheel?

If 110/6 wouldn't work, SIP do a few longer rod cranks now. Like the Uncle Tom 62 stroke, 127mm rod.

My crank is a 60mm bell crank for a P200, so unless you're assembling your own crank, or SIP now make them for a 150, you'll need a special little end bearing to match the wrist pin to the crank. It also changes the geometry a little bit, as well as (obviously) the stroke, so you'll want to be up on your port timing game, too, which then leads into a whole 'nother tuning discussion.
