I had my last Vespa before I got one this year, was in 1970, it was an ss180 reg number DPT 93G, which is a Durham ( UK ) registration. When I bought it the dealer told me that it was previously owned by the Secretary of the Vespa Club of Great Britain. I have often wondered if this was correct , I think it is likely as the scooter was covered in european rally decals, had a 12 volt conversion and two big lamps on the front, spot and fog. Just looked like it belonged to a serious scooterist. Does anyone go that far back and can confirm it ? thought not !! but there you go...
That is such a great photo. You can tell that the 60's were becoming the 70's. Lovely scooter. My dream Vespa is a 1968 SS180 (my YOB), but that was also the last of the SS line and not so many were made that year
You can spot the battle scars, stp sticker covering a graze, tape holding the headlight together, at the time i was earning £4.00 a week !!! the only thing i ever bought were the matching crashbars, the cheapest i could find and then fitted after the various scrapes happened ! loved it, so much grunt uphill, left my mate on his sx200 for dead though he did have a slightly higher top speed
Years after I had it I began to think the large amount of pulling power was possibly non standard, at the time I bought it there were a couple of dealers doing 206cc big bore kits, the Arthur Francis `Manhattan` and the Grimstead `Hurricane`. It`s possible the dealer I got it from sourced it for the first owner. The colour scheme and styling bear a great resemblance to both, who knows ?
