Northern lights may sweep across northern US
The aurora borealis could be seen as far south as Nebraska and Iowa

The Space Weather Prediction Center has issued geomagnetic storm alerts for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (December 9 - 11, 2020)

This may be the closest I will get to see the Northern Lights in person.

Northern Lights
My folks had a cabin on Lake Mille Lacs. (North Central Minnesota) We would
see the Northern Lights on a frequent basis. I may have had only one occasion to see them in the last 20 years. Due to light pollution in large urban areas (Twin Cities) and over cast skies - I guess those beautiful lights are a thing of the past for me.

I first saw the aurora borialis , in eastern North Carolina about 1968. This was confirmed by an Arctic scientist there at the time. Whod' a thought?

Then I saw the aurora australis at 64degrees 40 minutes south latitude in the Antarctic in May 1969 aboard the oceanographic vessel USNS Eltanin.

Marine biology/oceanography is a great field for travel.

Nothing since.

Nothing to see tonight. We drove fifty miles out of the Cities. The sky was only partly cloudy but we saw no lights.

Understood! Totally get it! Guess what? Woke up to a totally sunny day, with a forecast of a very clear night! Hopeful?

The Space Weather Prediction Center does have a web page that can tell you when an aurora will appear within 30 minutes. For both northern (borealis) and southern (australis) hemispheres. Space Weather Prediction Center - Aurora 30 minute forecast
