Dear friends,

I am looking at a 1974 Sprint Velocy. The owner says its a 74 but the title says 77. I read that this bike was only made til 76. The vin reads 0184366 and falls within range for 1974 according to scooter west. Thoughts?

Well, it certainly wouldn't be the first time there was an error on the title of an older vehicle. Is there any reason to think it is NOT a '74?

Thank you Dooglas,

I am not to familiar with vintage vespas and what they are supposed to look like stock. I looked it up online and they look the same except for the fact that there is not spare tire and on the one he is selling and I see that most sprint Velocy's have a spare tire mounted somewhere on the bike. Other than that, he sent me a pic of the plate where it is stamped 74. Said that it was manufactured in 74 in Italy and then sold in the states as new in 77.

Thank you!

I would suggest you pose this question in the NSM (not so modern) forum along with the photos you have. Some folks who frequent that forum are likely familiar with that model and can share their thoughts.

Take a look at the flywheel. Does it have a circlip to facilitate removing the flywheel by undoing the flanged nut? This will indicate that you have a narrow taper crankshaft which will support it being 1974. If it is a 1976/7, it's more likely to have the later crankshaft that was used in the P series. There is no flanged nut and no circlip as the later flywheel is removed with a puller tool.

I've recently seen a US spec 125 t.s. (autolube and indicators) which had the old style crank, despite being a 1977 bike, so the above is no guarantee.

It could well be a 74. There were very few Veloces brought into the US in 77. I don't think there were any cosmetic differences between 74-76. Pics would help. If it's a US spec scoot there will be telltale clues... autolube, tail light, flashers, headset switches, and some miscellaneous other items.

So I am referencing my "How to Restore and Maintain your Vespa Motorscooter" by Bob Darnell and Bob Golfen.

The Vespa 150 Sprint Veloce (VLB1T) doesn't start with a "0", but if you were to start it with a "18..." It is a 1974 (173346 - 213336). Perhaps the initial "0" to designate it for the US market?
