I am getting ready to install my FACO rear rack and watched the Scooterwest
vid. I wanted to make sure I had all the right tools and this driver was listed.

This driver is the tool that's supposed to remove the bolts near/under the seat where the rack attaches on each side. I've tried substitutes that I have, like an allen wrench, but nothing fit and I didn't want to mess anything up so....I thought I'd go out and buy the right things. No 2/34s driver anywhere. I can't figure out what Robot is talking about. It looks like a star bit.

Also, I have a windshield (OEM) coming someday and it's supposed to need a 3mm wrench, which is pretty small. I'll double check that one later.

I bought a Phillips with a 90 degree bend because I thought it would be handy, also. These will all go together in a Vespa designated 'tool box'. I have tool sprawl in my shed.

I went to the thread here about the FACO install problems so I hope things go better for me, since I have a 2020. I do own a rubber mallet if it comes to anything serious.

I believe it is a T30 Torx. They can come in many iterations.. a bit, socket style or tool similar to an Allen Wrench. big photo of the star shape below.

I believe you also use a #2 Phillips screwdriver.

thanks.
Thanks! I would have gone ahead and bought a Torx set but there was also a ball-end type. I think I'm all set! I did buy a #2 Phillips with a 90 degree bend and hope it makes things a little easier at the rear attachment.

There are a few things that are a "go to" for me in almost any mechanical job and this is one of them.

https://www.griotsgarage.com/product/113+piece+tamper+proof+bit+set.do

I am not peddling for Griots even though I have this same set. There were some easy to find alternates on ebay last time I looked but I'm not having any luck right now. The best part about this kit is the sockets both metric and SAE. You want these! They are so thin that they can get in a lot of tight places and they are made very well. True that 25 years later my set is starting to show some rust, especially the ones I dont use often but this is one of those must have things if you are going to be mechanical. IMHO

Mystery solved!! Yes, as Shelbalba said it IS a T30 Torx. I listened to another of Robot's install videos and his pronunciation was MUCH clearer. T30 Torx, not 2/34th. Good grief. ROFL emoticon

You can get a similar set from Harbor Freight for a LOT less depending on discounts, coupons, etc.

Also, never use a Phillips screwdriver on a TORX screw. You will bugger one of them depending on which has the better metal.

Metrinch sockets sound completely useless. They fall off the ratchet wrench, no detent.

I have gotten stuff from Harbor Freight and I have a Kobalt socket set from lowes that I bought off craigslist for $25. What I have come to realize through my experiences with cheap tools versus those used by the pros (I have had to go to them after I have busted a screw or a bolt) is cheap tools work ok for simple tasks. When bolts/nuts/torx heads/allen heads etc are a bit hard to come off the cheap tools are unable to work well end up stripping heads etc the good solid tools hold up and do the job. My own conclusion is to get a solid good set (costs some money) and until then I do the tasks that are simple like changing engine oil etc.
I am done buying cheap tools thinking it should do the trick as I am at best a weekend warrior.

I bought a T30 bit, but I doubt I will use it. It goes on a drill and I don't want to mess up the bolt head. Rather order a driver set and wait for what I think will the right tool. A hand tool! I have to leave town to shop (30 min to 60 min trips) or do amazon. Yes, no cheap metals! I'll pick something of quality.

holy crap
Boy am I making this hard. I ordered a driver set. I got impatient and used an old driver with a plastic handle. I tried to hook up the pieces to use the drill bit T30 that I bought. I put some strength into turning the driver and the plastic split to pieces in my hand. I picked up the driver and the bit fell into the engine...somewhere yet to be determined. Ok, now what? I bought a magnet and I'll put a string on it and hope for the best. It's no where on the floor.

I learned to always put a towel over your engine area if you're going to work above it. Crying or Very sad emoticon

Might I suggest another critical tool for the ol' toolbox..

I thought about that but it wasn't flexible. May still try it, and a flashlight to see what I can see. Requires a short trip back in to town!

They make a 3-in-1.

But if you're going into town might as well pick up anther T30.

I'm sure you'll find the bit on the floor someplace. Most likely as soon as you invest in a new one.

Good Luck!

got it!
Tied a string on a magnet and jiggled that T30 bit out of the engine! Couldn't even see it! Had to do a little fishing though.

PS Tie a loop in the other end of your string and put it around your finger or you may drop that into the engine, too.

The magnet trick !

Just remember you do not have to have the magnet on the inside the engine.
Just have a length of steel wire and attach the magnet on the side where your hand is. The steel wire will magnetise and find the loose part.

That way you can use a much stronger magnet to pull out the lost part.

My Vespa guru has modified one of those telescopic magnets with an LED goose neck lamp on the back so you can attach the lamp to any magnetic metal. Nerd emoticon

Hmmm. I've been using mine for at least 20 years and never noticed. They certainly don't fall off my 1/4 drive.

The tool tip stops are those little notches on the corners, the tip holder (tool) has small spring balls inside ... they can loosen over the years. Changing only the tip holder handle is cheap.
Attention because some screws have a low magnetic attractiveness due to the material, for example stainless steel or similar are not magnetic.

use a 1/4 inch socket to put the bit into. then standard ratchet.
