Greetings:
I gather it's not uncommon for Malossi 187 cylinders to be reluctant to turn over with the electric starter. The kickstart can bail you out, but for how many tries? I decided that I needed more Cold Cranking Amps to improve the percentage of time the engine could be spun over with the electric start.
Depending on where you do your research, the recommended battery size for the ET4 is either the TX-9 or the TX-12 BS. I opened the Battery Selector book at Wal-Mart and it suggested that a Size #12 should fit. I wasn't impressed with their "Ever-Start" brand so I ordered another Chrome Pro before realizing that my less-than 1 year old battery has been oozing sulfuric acid. The tray was a bit damp, and the unmistakable sour taste of the tray proved my suspicions. Don't worry! Being Canadian, my teeth will grow back.
So the Size 12 arrived, and sure enough, the footprints are close to identical. So it fits the tray. But what about the height? In my Original Wheelman's ET4 post, I wrote that the P.O. installed a #14 battery that was both to large for the battery tray and way too tall to install the cover. Sure it had the power, but it's just so Untidy! I'm happy to report that the Size 12 snugs up under the cover - which also serves to wedge it in place with a foam rubber buffer - just fine. Also pleased to report that so far, with a full charge, it turns the engine over every time. I just wonder if the ChromePro will leak again, even with its secure mounting?
