I really need some help here. We bought a '06 piaggio fly 150 about a year ago. Scroll down to the bottom for my question.

Back story: Got it for a great deal, $300. It hadn't ran in a year. Lady in her 20s owned it, had it serviced regularly at a reputable shop in Seattle WA. I I've worked on cars for 13 years. We show up and I realize all that's wrong is the vacuum line to the petcock. Patched it with some tape, jumped the battery, rode it an hour home. Replaced the line got a new battery and checked the belt. All seemed well. I even went as far to replace the clock battery and the Speedo didn't work when we got it but I lucked up and found someone parting one out and fixed that. Supposedly it only had 3k miles on it but without the speedo/odo working who knows.

Now we rode that scooter around for a year, I'd ride it 20 miles to work and 20 miles back every day mostly on the interstate doing 65mph on it. And my wife and I would ride it to parks on my off days. I'd say we put a solid 1k miles on it since we got it. Petcock failed on us at the end of summer so I got it ready for storage and for us to move back to TN. Now that is summer again I've been tuning it up to ride again this summer. I got it running well again- new petcock cleaned the carb inspected the belt ect.

Then I go to change the rear hub gear oil. What a nightmare this has become. I measured that I drained 340mL of gear oil out. I have a tendency to research before I start a project, but the information for these first generation piaggio scooters is scarce. There's only a scanned document of a service manual and two other threads on this forum that I was able to dig up. On this forum in one thread ppl are saying 200mL is the correct amount, I'm another thread on here a guy claims his service manual says 400mL but his service technician was telling him 100mL was correct. The scanned service manual I found on this forum doesn't give a mL specifically, just says to fill it to the bottom notch of the dip stick (apparently these dip sticks were used for multiple size scooters so they have multiple notches for the multiple fill levels). 200mL puts mine at the notch above the one the service manual indicates. It would seem 100-150mL would be correct by the service manual. I'm just not sure who to believe here. I know the similar leader engine Vespa calls for only 100mL. So why are ppl saying 200mL on here? And why did one guys thread on here state 400mL? (He even said he called some dealerships in Canada and they claimed he was correct). And mine had 340mL in it I drained out and looked perfectly fine- like I said we rode it for a year all over western Washington.

So what is the correct amount of gear oil for the rear hub????

I don't see the problem, buy a graduated flask and fill it with the required amount but first completely empty the gearbox of the old oil, let it empty for at least a couple of hours.
Put the drain plug back on.
Use the graduated flask to fill with the oil indicated in the use and maintenance manual.
Check the level with the supplied dipstick.

Well the problem is I don't know what the required amount is. People on here have said everything from 100mL - 400mL. Normally I'd trust the service manual over forum talk, but the picture of the drain bolt is in a different location than mine leading me to wonder if it's true my correct for my application. While that FSM is for the correct year and model of my piaggio, I started wondering if perhaps the rear hub on mine had been replaced with a Vespa hub due to lack of available parts or something in the past before I came to own it, as the drain bolt looks exactly like it does on a et4 Vespa lx150.

At any rate, scooter west in Cali emailed me back saying 200mL is correct and should be fine. So we're gonna give that a test drive and then I'll check and make sure it's not burning anything up.

100% is 200ml .

See workshop manual here ( and download it )

Hopefully that's an end to the confusion .
