I bought my 2018 Vespa new a couple of years ago. It now has over 700 miles on it. It has been barely ridden in the last year. It is overdue for its first service but I would rather avoid the dealership as its a couple of hours away and given the situation with Covid. Other than an oil change, which I can do myself, what would I be missing out on if I DIY? What else should I do?

I would imagine at 700 miles most parts will still be good.
I'd say visual inspections on the brake pads and fluid. Clean the air filter (or replace if you are feeling flush) Take off the exhaust and inspect the gasket, replace if needed. You could always inspect the belt and rollers but I can't imagine they would need doing yet. (give the surfaces the belt touches a good scrub with some sandpaper while you are there) The only other things are tyres and spark plug. It is always good to check for rust in the battery bay too, but I live in the UK so I think it's more of an issue for me with our slaty roads. |

I would say open up the manual that came with the scoot and there should be a table with maintenance intervals and what to check.

And it has been garaged when not ridden, so should be in good shape! I will check out the manual, thanks! Does anyone sell an oil change kit with the right oil and filter that you would recommend?

When you look at the maintenance schedule for your scooter, you will see that replacing the engine oil, engine oil filter, and rear hub oil are the primary tasks at 600 miles (1000 km) along with a bunch of inspecting and adjusting as needed. However, since 2 years have elapsed, the maintenance schedule also says that you are due for replacing the brake fluid and engine coolant, regardless of mileage.

The best way to need a new exhaust gasket with that mileage is to remove and inspect it. |

When you buy a filter, do buy a new exhaust gasket (graphite collar), as although they can last 12,000 miles and a couple of tyre changes, they can blow at any time. If you hear your exhaust get very loud, that is what needs replacing. Do NOT take off the exhaust just to inspect it! |

I am most likely going to stick with the basics for now and get it to a dealer this summer for a checkup. Thanks all!

What wbdvt said. Open up the manual and see what needs to be done. They are correct in that.
Engine oil, engine oil filter, and rear hub oil ARE the main things to do, pronto, and those are easy. At two years, the manual does spec a coolant and brake fluid change. Frankly, I wouldn't touch the brake fluid unless you are having problems. On the exhaust gasket: replace it if you do the brake fluid and have to remove the rear pipe. If not, skip it. Coolant, though, needs changing. It WILL stop preventing corrosion in about two years , and if you skip it for a couple of years you may open up the system and find a pile of rusty water. Engine oil & filter is 20-30 minutes Rear hub oil is about 20 minutes. Coolant is about an hour (take side off of pump, let everything leak out, tighten back, refill, burp, and be done). If it has those crummy little squeeze hose clamps, you might consider taking the time to replace them at this juncture, saving some future problem. |
