Hello. I was hoping for some help from anyone familiar with GTS 300 scooters.

I have never had any problems with my scooter, but last night I was out for a fairly long ride and started getting very peculiar engine trouble.

Here is how I can best describe what happens:

I'm driving normally and the scooter will suddenly "Hitch" or "Jerk" for a brief moment, losing momentum for about half a second. As it happens, the power to the headlights/dashboard will dim, and the engine light will come on for about three seconds then turn off. The "Hitching" feels as if there is a sudden loss of drive forwards, like a loss of engine power or like the transmission is slipping and the bike loses speed and jerks slightly.

I tried just firing it up today, and now it's doing it straight away.

The bike has only about 6000 km on it, and I took it for a tune up every year, maybe drove it 1000 km per year, so I don't see how it should be having that kind of trouble.

I called our one scooter specialist in the area and he says he's never seen or heard of anything like that, and that he has very little experience with fixing GTS 300 as it's an uncommon bike. If I can find out what the problem is I may be able to get it fixed, so I'm hoping someone here could help me, or perhaps point me towards a knowledgeable mechanic who has experience with the higher CC Vespas? That or give me some advice to what I can do to figure this out?

Really hope It's fixable, as the bike belonged to my late father and is very near and dear to me. I thank you for any help you could give me.

It may be the spark plug cap isn't on tight.

Vespa GTS 300s are very common on this forum. I'm sure you'll get plenty of help.

And check those battery terminals. It's classic symptoms of a loose battery connection.

I would just like to leave an update incase anyone in the future is having this exact problem and trying to fruitlessly search forums for a concrete answer.

I took the bike into my mechanic, and he opened up all of the electrical. First he removed all of the plugs and wires from the computer and the bike, cleaning all of the contacts and connectors. Then he inserted/reinserted all of the wires and contact points a couple of times to make sure everything had a solid connection.

This seems to have fixed the issue. The computer no longer blips out on the engine. So, it was not a mechanical or engine issue.

Hope this helps. 8)

Thanks for coming back to tell us what you have had done. Glad it's going ok.

However, if the problem re-occurs it's most likely the battery terminals loose. It's something that happens a lot to the GTS range and it causes exactly the same issues you described. There are countless posts on this site describing just the same issues that you have experienced. Just bear that in mind in case you mechanic hasn't quite got it nailed.

Enjoy your bike!
