Bit of a long shot, but has anyone here had any experience importing an oldtimer from Germany into the UK?

The process seems relatively straight forward on the HMRC website and since I am organising this as part of a residency move, I would not have to pay any import duties.

However, is there anything I need to look out for, specifically for Vespas, that I may have overlooked? The DVLA only really give general instructions on how to import a vehicle. I'm wondering whether the German TÜV documents are suitable to obtain vehicle approval and whether there any potential issues with components (headlight / exhaust) that may need to be looked at prior to MOT.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Chris,

the English authrities are not as strict as the Germans. UK vehicle documents only contain a fracture of the information your German ones will provide.

I am sure you know this webiste:

https://www.gov.uk/importing-vehicles-into-the-uk

The only thing that need to be changed is the headlight, as you need one for left-hand-drive.

Where are you moving? There might be a scooter shop in close distance to get the MOT. Mot is not as strict as TÜV.

Hi Leif,

Thanks for the reply. Yes this is the website which I am getting all my information from.

I'm moving back to my home town in Manchester. I personally don't know of any scooter shops nearby, but that would probably be a better approach, rather than taking it to any old MOT station.
