Here's the backstory. I live in an area where scooters let alone Vespas are very rare. In 5 years of riding here, I can count on one hand the number of scooters I have seen. A couple of years ago, a friend sent me some pics of a vintage Vespa he saw parked running downtown. Two days later, a pic shows up in the newspaper of the scooter on the front page along with the owners name. I was able to contact him thru LinkedIn but didn't seem a big scooter fan or getting together with others. Periodically contacted him and last year he said the kickstart broke. Fast forward to today and I contacted him to see if it was repaired and dropped a line that I would be interested if he wanted to sell. He replied back that he did not fix it and he would be interested in selling.

He said he thinks it is a 1967 Vespa Super 150. I see it has been modified with some blinkers but I will have to get out my Vespa model book and start looking. I will go look at it when I can and get better pics. These are the pics my friend took 2 years ago.

Thoughts on this?

thats one super Super! Seems like the mod's can all be reversed back to stock, but you'll want to look at it in person first for sure. Make sure no serious bodgey-mods have been made. Looks like it could be solid. Go tap-tap around check for rot, floor board bottom, etc.. If the price is right, I'd scoop it up nobrainer! Good luck

This is a 1974-76 American market 150 Super. Looks like probably 1976. judging by the indicators on the headset.

Looks nice from the photos. That orange color was original. Probably original paint. The turn signal posts are original. Lights themselves have been replaced.

That looks like a great bike. It's basically this one.

easy ways to tell the year for US bikes:
1966 mickey mouse tail light
1968 switch to hexagon piaggio badge
1974 switch block vespa script, addition of turn signals (still had the metal fuel tap)
1975/6? switch to plastic fuel tap thing.

Thanks all for the replies. I chatted with the owner and will be looking at the scoot on Saturday. Here is some of what he told me and sent some more pics.

Number on the frame is VBC1T 23379

The kickstart broke and he is not handy so he would have to take it someplace to be fixed. Motorcycle shops local did not want anything to do with it.

He broke the headlight moving it around.

He will consider selling for the right price and we will discuss that on Saturday.

Could be a nice find if the price is right.

The VIN would be 1966, unless you're missing a digit, in which case it's 1974.

Looks like 1974. It has the hex badge and autolube. And that was a 1970s color.

"Broken kickstart" could just be a stripped kick lever...

Just sayin'

But if you can scoop this sub 2k and willing to swing some wrenches this could be a real nice bike.

I'm looking at it like it's a diamond in a goats ass.

Thanks for all the replies and I think hjo is correct in that it is a 1974 and either he read off the wrong VIN or I missed a digit when he was telling me it over the phone.

I have made arrangements to look at it on this Saturday, 4/24 and will get more detailed pics and take a magnet with me. Any specific items I should pay close attention to?

Will keep everyone posted on Saturdays visit and if I end up a vintage owner!

Paint looks original except
for the yellow highlights, so idk that the magnet is really needed.

Look underneath for rust.
Make sure the top end isn't locked up.

Check the serial numbers in the frame and engine.

I also have a little laser pointer I use to see if the frame looks straight. (Shoot a line from the center line behind the seat and make sure the steering column, etc. lines up.)

Open up the tank see how roached it is.

YMMV

Bought it!
Ok, I am now the owner of a NSM Vespa. It is a 1974 150 Super. I looked at it today and it looked very solid. The gas tank was partially full with the oil/gas mixture but the sides of tank that I could see were clean.

I could get it to shift into 1, 2 and N but meet a lot of resistance to go to 3 so did not want to force anything, same with kick start.

Overall it looked good with not a lot of, to use greasy's term, fuckery on it. The guy did say that the previous owner said he installed a performance piston and head on it. There is a box of spare parts that include a exhaust, piston, cylinder, head, carb, gaskets, new cables, etc.

I bought it for $1k, so per Greasy, sub $2k doing well. Not going to be able to do much until winter on this other than lots of research, so expect questions in this area of the forum.

Congratulations! Definite score.

I love all the creative engineering the previous owner.

Looks like it was originally a bright yellow.

My favorite 1970s color for those was this mustard yellow. The most 1970s color ever.

Welcome to the Super Club! With that pinasco sticker and the extra cylinder and piston you mention sounds like indeed there is a kit and exhaust upgrade. Determine whether there was a battery or if it's been converted and is battery less. My super has that conversion and it's great. Start researching on scooterhelp, youbie-tubie and this forum.

Take small stuff apart and check it out then put back together. Pull the tank and explore the tunnel. Start a photo library. Anything you remove...bag it and tag it so you remember where and what it is, and can even label the Cables until you know which they are.

Have fun! Nice score.

Unless the gears are moving, it is almost chance if it hits the gear positions. The selector ( cruciform) has to line up with the slots in the gears. Jack up the rear wheel and turn the tire while you see if you can get the other gears.

What do you mean about the kick start ? Try kicking it over with the plug removed.
