It's time to bid adieu to our old server, which served us well for almost a decade.

Farewell, old friend.

"The king is dead! Long live the king" never quite made sense to me, but somehow seems applicable.

Every morning while having my cuppa I log into MV. I was in from the beginning after it replaced the Scooter-BBS. I think I was the 76th member to join MV. So glad it hasn't moved to Facebook.

Long live the King!

There used to be some spirited scooter discussions during those early days. It would be interesting to hear from some of those early folks. I bet many moved away from scooters...My addiction continues...!

Interesting you mention it. I'd be rather curious to see those lists expanded, like the thread lists. Pages on pages of history...

When I first saw this thread title my first thought was of Judy and Al, I still have Judy's phone # wish I had saved a message, and I think of Al every time someone starts an " Oil " thread. It's been a fast ten and a half years on MV for me and I'm happy to see that it will continue into the future.

Server Support
Hi I am a Lurker,

It suits me because I would rather read than post umpteen messages of literary that has already been said.
I congratulate you on moving server and have flourished myself in the knowledge that is shared.
I would like to show my appreciation in offering some financial support.
I see many on YouTube taking fees so, I wish to offer my support to this site.
It probably isn't for everyone and I can see that nor do I wish to guilt trip anyone.

I will not use Paypal but will pay by debit card, as many eBay sellers have lost my business due to their payment structure.
All the best for the future.

Folk should follow the advice here:

This. It's almost a certainty that photos not uploaded to Modern Vespa will eventually be gone. We willingly pay the cost to store and serve the photos uploaded here so that they remain as long as the forum is alive. I strongly urge you all to take advantage of that.

Quite a run
10 years on a server is an eternity these days, although I never noticed any adverse issues.

I've learned so much over the years and interacted with some tremendous people, even met a few in person!

Kudos to those in charge for keeping this place up & running and a genuinely great place on the internet.

One notable failure of the old server was that it would crash -- completely hang -- when flooded with requests. The Bing crawler (bingbot) is notorious for not being able to control their own crawl rate, and would occasionally hit the server simultaneously from multiple IP addresses in what essentially amounted to a DDoS attack.

The incompetence at Bing is just astounding. If you've ever watched Bing crawl a site and see some of the incredibly stupid things it does, you would never use Bing.

One thing that makes it easy to upload images on another forum I frequent is drag-and-drop image field rather than having to load each separately though the "Attachments window". I realize the older BBS software may not allow/provide for that functionality. Just sayin'!

I am continuing to post notes as I encounter possible shortcomings (forgive me for the imperfect use of terminology); about the image host I'm using Postimage and ... yes Jess, you're right ... Using your link the photos will remain linked to the forum. I'll try to use it.

Agreed. That said, most browsers allow you to drag the file to the "Choose File" button. It's just a smaller target to hit.

What we have has worked OK - however on another forum I frequent ( thesamba.com ), also very heavily customised, the owner programmed the 'gallery' so you can:

Upload multiple pictures at the same time.
Choose to insert any previously uploaded pictures.

This means I don't have to repeatedly upload the same image (e.g. the U-bolt used as a clutch tool) several times. OK, I could make a note of the URL of the first instance each time I upload an image, but frankly that's too tedious.

It also means a member can peruse all images uploaded, by member name if that search option is used. This proves very useful.

However, perhaps a SMOP too far.
