Driver behind me decided it would be good to not pay attention for a bit and thus didnít notice all the cars stopped at the light.

Luckily he could have been going a lot faster than he was.

Not too banged up, bruised leg/ankle I think from the leg sheild. I was wearing helmet.

Luckily, I had installed some crash bars and they seemed to take most of the brunt. They are now bent at the junction point in the rear. Taillight busted, and the front end smashed into the van in front of me demolishing the front fender.

I havenít had it inspected yet (shop is a few hours away) but I did notice that it seemed like the alignment is slightly off. But I donít know if thatís a thing on bikes. It could be just my imagination or the front luggage rack being slightly off center.

Itís still drivable - as far as I canít tell. But again, if thatís risky for some reason - I wonít. Iíll try to get to the shop in a few days.

Any advice?

Glad you're okay!

FWIW, this is why filtering to the front at stop lights is safer than waiting "your turn" behind traffic. If you live somewhere that doesn't tolerate filtering, it's still a good idea to position yourself in the farside of the lane, so an oblivious driver goes around you rather than through you.

Vespas are expensive to fix and get right.

I'm guessing insurance is going to write that off.

At this point, be sure you get as much as you can for the write off. Detail how much it will really cost to replace your scooter and accessories to make you whole. If your helmet impacted the ground, they need to pay for that replacement as well.

Don't be shy about asking for more $$ to make you whole and don't sign anything without reviewing it carefully.

Make sure the driver never makes that mistake again by making this experience as painful as possible!

Too many drivers paying too little attention nowadays!

Glad you weren't seriously injured.

Oof. That indeed could have been worse. I'm a bit surprised the crash bars did any good under those circumstances...

I'd strongly suspect your fork is somewhat bent. It certainly would affect handling. I'm not sure if it's actually dangerous to ride, but obviously want to get things sorted ASAP.

You'd really notice if the fork was bent - the front of the bike would go up and down depending on where the wheel was pointed.

I suspect it's just the handlebars rotated slightly on the steering column - very, very common. Gentle taps against the end-stop can tweak it into line, or better with the wheel against a kerb. If it won't go straight like that then remove the headset and adjust by loosening/tweaking/tightening the handlebar clamp.

First off glad you're OK!

My guess is insurance would write it off especially if there is any damage to the body. You haven't mentioned a report or insurance though so not sure how that plays out here.

I went down admittedly harder and where the crash bars were the scoot was fine. It was the floor board that took the brunt of it and was bent which made it a write off even though I still got a fair amount for the scoot.

Get it to the shop and see what they say. If you were rear ended while stopped though you are not at fault in any way and insurance should take care of it. Vespas are notoriously hard to straighten out once there is any real amount of damage. Forks aren't that bad a cost but bodywork is brutally expensive.

Is there any damage to the Grey mini van in front of you? If so, be prepared for a hit on your insurance from that driver. Suck that other guy dry.

Strongly agree with the filtering post. Utah is one of the few states that allow filtering and I do it regularly. Glad youíre ok.

Wait, they do?!? When did that happen? For years, California was the only state that (mostly) allowed filtering. Was this recent?

Thanks for all the tips. The minivan in front had very little damage actually; Much more damage from a previous accident - I think there was a slight scratch at the very bottom of the bumper where my fender hit.I donít suspect they will bother.

Itís not legal here to split the lane, but I suppose getting in the habit of moving over could be helpful, but who knows. They driver could have instead side-swiped my leg as I was stopped.

Iím in a no-fault state, the driver was visiting from out-of-state so I have no idea how this will work out.

The driver (and the driver in van in front) were both ďMidwesternĒ nice - and the guy who hit me admitted to us and the cop that he wasnít paying attention.

I donít know how that impacts things, and havent seen a copy of the police report.

The Vespa was a 2018 - bought new last year; had 3900 miles on it. I suppose if I get enough money from the insurance, I could sell this and buy a new oneÖ.?..?

Iím not sentimentally attached - but want to keep riding.

Problem with sitting off to the right while stopped at a light in traffic.....You'll suddenly have a car easing up alongside your tail-light or left leg. Guaranteed!
If you only move over a little ---- you'll still get pinched, so will have gained nothing.
Nothing for it - except to ride in a car in town - and a scooter out in the country.

Isn't that the same word that american general Anthony Clement McAuliffe said to nazi general Hasso von Manteuffel during the siege of Bastogne in the Ardennes?

Splitting and its cousins are explicitly legal in California, Montana, Utah, and Hawaii. Additionally, much of the southwest/midwest doesn't officially tolerate it, but also haven't explicitly made it illegal.

Here is the relevant thread.

Iíve been playing phone tag with my insurance (USAA) the driver had State Farm (he was from out of state visiting.

Iím trying to anticipate what the insurance will be if they total it out. I checked the NADA site and it says

Retail

Average
Retail
$6,100

Iím not sure which number they use.

I also assume once itís totaled - that it wouldnít be insurable?

Trying to guess how likely I will be to getting a new VespaÖ.

I also found out that I know someone who fixes / restores vespas so that could be helpful.

They will likely use the lowest number; do your homework by finding current comparables in your area to establish your true replacement cost. Current listings will bolster your position to get the best outcome. Be sure to include cot of accessories and a new helmet.

It may depend on the policy of your insurance company but I have had vehicles that were totaled, repaired and returned to the road and they were insurable but the rates were about the same as before but the payout would be less if it were damaged again, so I just got liability insurance.
