Migration could also be a good opportunity to handle customizations. For instance, if Discourse doesn't have good options for upvoting or video embedding, those could be programmatically baked into the posts as they're migrated, e.g. appending "This post was highly rated."

Saying things you've probably already thought of, just in case that's helpful. 🙃

That's a good suggestion, and no, I haven't thought of everything yet.

I suspect the migration itself will be a design exercise. I'm still working up to it.

Jess, One of the things that got broken is the method I use to create URL tags.

1. Create label such as "motorcycle covers" as inline text
2. Select the label
3. Click on the URL tag which surrounds the label with [URL] and [/URL]
4. Change the [URL] tag to [URL=<website>]

Now when I do this, it puts the [URL] tag at the bottom of the text and I have to hit the URL tag again to get the closing tag. But it never surrounds the label text.

Same thing is happening with underlining, italics, bold, quote and img. I don't use code, list or list= but I suspect those may be broken as well.

Sorry. Miguel

I thought that had always been the behaviour. Same with inserting emoticons - they go at the end, NOT where the cursor is. I'd got used to just typing them long-hand rather than use the tags.

I would love it if the tags and emoticons would stay with selected text or the cursor. Another one to be scratched onto the clay tablet?

Okay, the bug with adding tags around highlighted text should be fixed. Itís a classic case of trying to optimize one thing and breaking three others.

Testing an url: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1067528

Thanks again for the heads up.

This bothers me
On the Mac I get an overly helpful auto fill in the subject line. It wonít let me shorten a previously used subject. I donít think I see that behaviour on other devices but then the subject line is harder to access on my phone.

Actually do we need one apart from the first post?

Some threads lend themselves to new subject lines in replies.

However, it is a tactic irritatingly used by some in just about every reply they make, so I'd be very happy for the opportunity for new subjects halfway into threads to be a thing of the past.

Since Bill Dog's demise I would guess that the in-thread subject line has been used a lot less frequently. Or at least, to less mind-twisting effect.

"An" url?

Yup, it works for highlighted text, great - but you still can't insert a start tag (or an emoticon) at the cursor if that is in the middle of some text - it still gets placed right at the end.

I use it now and then. Being unable to see it on iOS is depriving those users from not very much at all usually.

Itís a fine question. I think I turned off display of the subject for subsequent posts at one point because BillDog abused it endlessly. It appears that I must have reversed course, though, because itís showing now. I would seriously consider removing it.

As you said, I think it was always like that. The javascript used on the message posting page is archaic, too. Iíll look at it, but Iím not making any promises that Iíll be able to make sense of it.

Ok, whenever.

The above is a classic example of the need, sometimes, to have nested quotes to enable comprehension. It's a PITA to put them back in longhand. Far easier to edit out unnecessary cruft than add necessary nuggets back in.

If there is one thing I have learned from the Brits right here at MV it is that the Brits have no fucking idea how to speak English.

I still agree with you. Weíre going to try it out for a while and see how much the flat-quote style annoys us. I might consider adding back a single level of nesting, but probably no more than that. The usefulness falls off dramatically after one extra level of quotes.

This article makes the persuasive argument that trying to fix the smily insertion problem is a terrible idea. He doesnít actually come out and say that, but if you read between the lines, youíll see that he is clearly daring us to try to implement something that will function on more than 3 out of 5 browsers at a time.

One level of nesting would seem to be fine - I'm sure it'd be very rare for a greater number to be more useful rather than more annoying.

As far as I remember, it's always put the emoticons at the end of the text. The solution on my Mac is to hit Command-Control-space to bring up the native emoticons and just click to insert them.

I have just pushed a change to the server that, at least in my limited testing, properly inserts emoticons wherever the cursor is. Iíve also removed a bunch of very old IE-specific javascript that (I think) is no longer relevant.

I figure thereís an 80% chance that I broke something else in the process, though. That seems to be my hit rate these days. Iím sure yíall will let me know

Aaand .. a workaround for getting a tag or emoticon to go where the cursor is - highlight a space in the text {do your thing} and then add another space to restore readability .

Theoretically with the latest change you shouldnít have to highlight the space, just place the cursor and click the emoticon . That said, whatever text you do highlight will be replaced by the emoticon.

Tags work differently. Whatever text is highlighted should have the tags wrapped around that text.

Emoticons in the middle of text is working for me.

But if I click on "View More Emoticons" and insert one, it puts it at the end of the text. Miguel

I usually bold, italicize, underline and strikethrough by selecting the word/phrase and use Ctrl+b / i /u / s. Current Firefox uses those key combos, so I'll have to use the buttons.

Yuck! Just noticed Amazon adverts for 'similar items' at the bottom of the front page. Enabled Privacy Badger for MV and they're gone again. Phew! Adblock plus didn't touch them.

The offending site: z-na.amazon-adsystem.com

I consider any unsolicited advert to be spam. Fuck-em. I don't allow any on any site I go to, whether it be Facebook or the Washington Post.

On the "New Since Last Visit" page, the bottom "Mark All Read" button doesn't seem to do anything except refresh the page. The top one works as expected. (At least, that's my experience with Chrome on both an Android phone and a Chromebook.)

Not a huge deal at all, but I figured I would mention it in case it indicates something else might be wonky.

Even when I spend time away from this forum, I'm always glad to see that it's still here when I come back. Nice to have a small bit of relative stability on the internet.
