This is a recurring theme, actually. There are a few other regulars in roughly the same boat.

Lol I'm still wracking my brain on what kinda care packages i can send back to you and the few other members who have sent me stuff to help when asked. Trying to save everyone's mailing addresses for the day when i can return those favors. Although I'm sure a few might not remember and be confused as to who they are getting a package from.

We may not have met, but I think I know many MV members personally. Reading posts about a member's medical issues, oysters, beards, watches, bicycles et al and of course scooters brings me closer to that member. There's even a vague image of what each could look like, if there is no photo of you on MV. Until I saw Greasy's photo recently, I thought he looked like his avatar, side burns and all, how disillusioning Razz emoticon .
I'm not game to describe what the rest of you look like in my brain, but most are riding scooters in your underwear.

Funny though cause it seems the current ones going through growing pains with internet socialization are the members of society who ignored computers for the first few decades as it didn't relate to their lives, and now have found sudden usage of it.

Result.. they don't understand catfishing, nor that they are being catfished!
I've been a software engineer for over 30 years and don't give a rip about "internet socialization" because it isn't real. In the digital realm people put forth an alternate version of themselves, smarter than they are, prettier than they are, stronger than they are, richer than they are, happier than they are. Social media does nothing so much as make people feel like crap about themselves as they wonder, "Why isn't MY life as great as that of this one or that one?" It's so sad.

I'll give you that.
I'm a hell of a lot more honest here on MV than I am on "social media".
Though, I don't suffer from that envy you mention.

Probably 'cuz I'm super (duper) smart, sorta handsome, less than paunchy, not-quite-yacht-wealthy, and totally lacking in anything to complain about.

I understand why Facebook does it the way they do it -- it's an endorphin feedback loop that keeps users hooked, keeps them online for longer, and keeps them coming back. Not having a mechanism for thumbs-down eliminates what is surely the most common vector for abuse, but it also means that there's no disincentive to being a dick on Facebook. Or Twitter. Or anywhere else in the social media world, for that matter. And as a result, you get a different kind of abuse, one where people can harass other people with impunity.

So, yeah. I think I'm happy with the balance that MV has.
So am I, relative latecomer that I am here.

I'm in the same situation. My 2009 GTV got totaled about 20 months ago. But I still have an old BMW I ride regularly. And truth be known, I preferred riding the BMW to the GTV even tho its not nearly as agile. I also like the MV crowd and MV is about as close as I get to social media.

I saw the HBO documentary "Fake Famous" that opened my eyes to this phenomenon. It might be generational. I don't find it to be true in my life or for most of my peers.

Fortunately, I haven't found it to be the case for most MVers that I've met in person. I met one MV participant who seems normal (for lack of a better term) but presents the alternate / enhanced version of themselves here that you describe. He's someone I'd avoid in real life.
I've met several MVers who've surprised me by being perfectly charming in person while their on-line persona leaves a lot to be desired.
The vast majority have been the same on-line as in person: warm, welcoming, helpful, happy to geek-out talking scooters (or craft-beers or gardening or any number of other subjects).
I miss those who are no longer here and am always happy to see familiar names /avatars posting. It's even better when I get to see them in person.

Jess, I have SUCH respect for what you have set up here, and have come back to bring it into the 21st century whilst it retains it's own homely charm. I feel I know so many of these people but have only met one - in West Island (Australia) - when there to celebrate my 65th birthday. I look forward to the world returning to its former self and being able to travel and meet some more of you in person. Again, Jess, thank you so much for what must be an inordinate amount of work.

I got the negative karma warning, which came as a surprise. Other forums don't use any system like this. Perhaps because they fail to see the usefulness of it? Methinks some petty individual is blowing their daily downvote on me every day LOL.

I'm amused and nonplussed by you whoever you are. I can downvote too you know. 1 downvote per day LOL

To the Forum Overlord: I can't imagine how you could create this system and not expect people to abuse it. Real motorcyclist forums wouldn't even bother.

Autoban is a misnomer. A more accurate term would be automatic ban.

The term autoban implies that the member/author voluntarily surrendered the membership such as what happened to Birreh. He was autobanned.

At the end of this year, I will hit the 30 year mark as a Software Engineer at a Very Large Corporation. So cheers!
That's unusual to work for the same company for 30 years! Congrats on that accomplishment.

I worked as a Software Engineer for a large Santa Clara based company for 21 years. I've spent another 15 years with a few other large tech companies along the way. Now retirement is approaching fast. Software engineering has been a great career, but I'm about ready to step aside.

In some parts of northern Italy they still eat the cat (only the cat without the fish); if you go there and you know where you will never order the rabbit or the hare, it could be a cat ... it's traditional to do so.
(Well ... better than eating the bat (ouch!), we know how the story would end ... )

I'm still working up the nerve to try cicadas tacos.
