My son has twice had someone push over his scooter at work. (It's not a Vespa, it's a Yamaha SMAX, but still.) I do loan him the Vespa from time to time.

Who would do such a thing? I may be naive, and we may live in a relatively peaceful corner of the world, but in the headspace I live in, people don't just shove scooters over when they walk by, and in all the years I've had the Vespa, it's never happened to me.

Has it ever happened to anyone on the list?

Here is the security camera footage from his workplace of the second incident:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1uVzsqPz6uRGkJDZS16rFmcjY_fRZTxw-/view?usp=sharing.

It seems like a very pissed off young man. I wonder if he is the same person who pushed it over a couple of days ago. My son has started a police report. The guy's face isn't shown in the video, but he seems pretty distinctive nonetheless.

And if the police nab him, is he responsible for the damage? Or would we have to sue him for damages? So far, it's just a cracked plastic body panel and a cracked front blinker housing, (the lens doesn't sit flush with the back housing. I've repaired it with the time honored technique of covering the gaps with some electrical tape. We have a $500 deductible on the insurance, so I'm not sure it's even worth pursuing that route.

It just makes me disappointed in people. The manager of the movie theater my son works in said he could park it inside - I hope they follow through on that offer.

Wow, what a douchebag... some people just plain suck. Don't hold your breath on getting anything, if they bother to track the guy down.

I had a scoot knocked over once. I lucked out--it was already a POS bike to begin with, no damage was done, and it was in front of a lot of witnesses. I was still super pissed, though. Basically, an SUV driver who clearly couldn't handle his vehicle properly decided that he could squeeze into a too-small space, and dumped my scoot trying to parallel park behind it. I lit into him as he was picking it up, and everyone else waiting in line for their Christmas Honeybaked Ham was on my side.

Some folks just don't care. I've also come out to my bike and seen a deliberately placed cigarette on top of a freshly burnt hole in the seat.

People who are jealous.

Or jerks who think scooters are “gay”

I’ve met them both. Take your choice... there’s far too many of both kinds.

Thanks everyone for chiming in - I just felt so angry when my son sent me the security footage this morning. Without that, I was just assuming someone may have stumbled into it drunkenly, (the movie theater is in an outdoor area where there are a lot of breweries). That was certainly no accident. And twice in three days - Sheeesh.

Do you mean they hate scooter owners for "cultural appropriation"?

Jokes aside, I just can't believe someone would do that. We, scooteristas, are so... ehm... open to the world in all senses. Not in a cage, not even under an umbrella, we face all the world around us and believe it is kind to us (because if not, we'd better not ride a scooter).

Man that sucks. I think in the law that comes under "malicious mischief". There should be at least some County jail time for it. I don't do Facebook but this video should be put on by everyone so it will go viral. I agree he is just a low-life loser who has nothing and is jealous of anyone who has something he wants.

Gladly, no. I have never had anyone knock any of my scoots over. I guess the morons who do that are the same morons who play mailbox baseball.

Too bad we can't put 20,000 volts on the scooter frame with respect to ground. It would certainly cure this attitude.

Cheers,
Bob

Where there's a will, there's a way. I don't know squat about electricity but if tasers don't need a big battery surely there's something that can be done to cure this dick.

Reminds me of that scene in Big Daddy when Adam Sandler asks the goth guy who won the Jets game...

"You're mad at your dad, not at me!"

Something tells me he's going to have an outburst in front of the wrong person eventually.

It happened to me too about six years ago ...
For the consequences of such a vandal gesture, I was tried, fined and reprimanded ...
All because when I surprised him I gave him two slaps in the face, what an exaggeration. Don't do it too.
I am sorry...but that day I was also angry about other problems. I'm usually a good person.

Happened to me a few times after I picked the wrong time to be a new resident of Portland, OR. Lots of "locals only" vibes in 2013-14.

Still miss the food there anyway!

Well, need to run an insulated wire down to the sidestand 'foot', to an insulated cap, in order to ground one side of the circuit. The tires should insulate the rest of the scooter. Maybe get one of the 'dashcams' with radar trigger to power up the high-voltage circuit. Although with your luck the guy has a heart condition, has a heart attack, and dies. So, maybe not.

Seems like if you can identify the guy, you can take him to small-claims court for the damages.

The world is full of jerks. Dealing with them can become a full-time job, so sometimes it pays just to let it go.
