News Flash: Modern Vespa is under attack.

Actually, that's not news. The MV server is hit by a wide array of attacks on a daily basis. Really, all websites are. What's news is the number of malicious attempts coming from a single IP address -- in Canada.

This particular IP address has been responsible for countless overlimit events on MV -- basically, rapid-fire requests for pages in quick succession. We've had overlimit detection for many years, and any IP address that asks for too many pages in a very short amount of time will get banned automatically for 7 days.

This same address has also been trying to login periodically with random usernames that don't exist. It's probably from a list of compromised usernames from elsewhere on the internet, so relatively harmless. But I've recently started logging these attempts so that I can pick out particularly malicious actors.

But, Canada?!? I thought they were nice.

They've also managed to achieve the astounding feat of appearing in the stopforumspam database -- which MV participates in -- almost a quarter of a million times. That's amazeballs.

Anywho, this IP address is now permanently banned from MV.

Canada. Whoda thunk?

Canadians ARE nice, and with technology today fraudsters can route their bots through networks worldwide with impunity and lead you to believe something that is not. I get BS from IP addresses that appear to originate from California all the time, as well as Germany, the Netherlands, Russia, etc.... the list goes on.

Wasn't me either...

There have been instances of Trump supporters sneaking across the boarder in the night to buy warm clothing and worth while beer and some of them have been known to cause trouble.

They can usually be spotted easily, just look for beat up Yamaha Rivas wearing Vespa logos.

Update: I've had to add a few more that appear to be from the same source:
deny from 198.144.159.81
deny from 198.144.149.253
deny from 199.167.138.22
It's actually fairly rare that we ban an IP address in this way, at the httpd / Apache server level. Most of the IP restrictions are done in the forum software, and are time-limited. Fourteen days is the typical IP restriction time.

This one is permanent.

No.. really... we are. Its pretty sickening really. Just once I'd like to drop a door in someones face and laugh at them but its not in our genes. We just politely hold the door open and make apologies for everything.

It does however nicely hide the fact that we are quietly taking over the world's supply of poutine and backbacon.

ge
Seeing as how Toronto has over 6 million people odds are there will be some bad seeds. Also a good portion of our population is first or second generation and Canadian politeness can take a generation to become ingrained. Toronto may very well be the most diverse city in the world when it comes to race, colour and religion. You do not need to get very far out of the city to notice how different the rest of the province can be. We stay at 3 different cottages every summer and the lack of diversity is stunning. When you go to a "Chinese" restaurant and the hostess is white plus burgers and poutine are on the menu you know you have left the city...

Like Fritz said , yes we really are that polite. We do say sorry for everything and holding the door open for someone is hardwired as is pushing a stuck car out of the snow etc. Toronto is a little different than the rest of the country which is good in some ways and not so great in others.

North York used to be a city but was swallowed up during the amalgamation. I live in actual downtown (King W neighbourhood) which is really not that large. I believe a lot of other large cities around the world have gone through amalgamation. OK enough of that.

Oh poutine.. I grew up in Montreal in the 70's and Quebec was about the only place to get it. When we had an out of province hockey game/road trip we always stopped the team bus coming back at a Harvey's just on the Quebec side as it had poutine. Since then it has taken the world by storm and you can get it anywhere in Ontario. A simple fries , curd cheese and gravy dish is our secret weapon. Oh and you can keep Justin Bieber thank you very much.
