News Flash: Modern Vespa is under attack.
Actually, that's not news. The MV server is hit by a wide array of attacks on a daily basis. Really, all websites are. What's news is the number of malicious attempts coming from a single IP address -- in Canada.
This particular IP address has been responsible for countless overlimit events on MV -- basically, rapid-fire requests for pages in quick succession. We've had overlimit detection for many years, and any IP address that asks for too many pages in a very short amount of time will get banned automatically for 7 days.
This same address has also been trying to login periodically with random usernames that don't exist. It's probably from a list of compromised usernames from elsewhere on the internet, so relatively harmless. But I've recently started logging these attempts so that I can pick out particularly malicious actors.
But, Canada?!? I thought they were nice.
They've also managed to achieve the astounding feat of appearing in the stopforumspam database -- which MV participates in -- almost a quarter of a million times. That's amazeballs.
Anywho, this IP address is now permanently banned from MV.
Canada. Whoda thunk?
