Does anyone know what is the normal life expectancy of a water pump on a GTS 300? I heard one statement it was 25,000 miles as they are a wear item. Most people don't put a lot of miles on their scooters so there is not much (if any) talk about replacing water pumps.

I can't give a definitive answer but I would think following Vespa's schedule for coolant flush and refill with the correct coolant would be advisable for the longest water pump life.

As Nightwing says, if the coolant is changed regularly, on time, using the correct product, the pump will last quite some time. I've changed out a pump on the GTS300 at 35,000 miles and another at 45,000 miles. Both pumps were the originals. If you neglect the coolant changes expect the pumps to go out to lunch earlier. The coolant is vital for lubricating the seals in the pump, and old coolant can't do that so they fail early.
The other thing I noticed is that the pumps fail earlier on bikes used for high speed running on highways (our motorways and dual carriageways) for mile after miles for much of it's life. It's like anything else in life, if you stress it a lot, it won't last as long! The good news is that the water pump replacement job is easy to do by a good diy'er with a bit of research first, although the complete pump is a bit pricey! |

Don't forget about oil. The water pump on my bikes have a seal holding back coolant and another seal holding back engine oil. Dirty/acidic oil can foul a seal. Stromrider has pointed out many times before, if you only ride short distances, change your oil more often.

I think I'm an outlier....my pump failed before 50K, and I'd been religious with fluids. But, as always, YMMV, literally.

Is that just before 50,000 miles? If so, that's not bad at all for the GTS and is about the expected time depending on the bikes maintenance and use. At the end of the day, it's a hard working component.
