Hello All! New to the forum and anything with two wheels.

I just bought a 2009 Piaggio Fly 150 with 2,800 miles. It keeps dieing mid-ride when I have my girlfriend on the back. Together we weight ~430lbs. I understand that is a lot of weight, but the engine was not struggling or anything, it would just die. Here is how it went:

-Bought it and drove 8 miles by myself no problem.
-Later in the evening went for a ride with GF and drove for 2 miles no problem.
-Then it died middle of intersection. Took a few tries to restart. Kept riding.
-1 minute later died, took awhile to restart. This repeated until I could get it home.
-Want to note that in between one of these dies/restarts my buddy told me to push it hard with just me on it and I did, no problem. GF got on and it died.
-Next morning we try again. Same thing.
-Decided to take it out myself and rode 20 miles no problem.

Currently with the dealer and they can't recreate the problem.

Does anyone have any ideas of what this could be from? I understand the additional weight is not good for the scooter, but don't understand how it dies with my GF on the back and will be fine right away if its just me.

Thanks!

Some wire or other is getting pulled or pushed due to the extra weight narrowing the gap between frame or petcarrier and the engine, especially after going over a bump - even quite a small one.

Check the spark plug wire first, then anything else that might be put under stress.

I can't find it anywhere. I assume it's less than 400lbs.

That is what I was thinking as well. But dealer has not said anything about that. They are going to replace the ignition coil..

Hard to understand why that particular problem would only appear when you are carrying a passenger?

Absolutely. That's why I think a pinched something is the answer, hopefully.

It's actually quite common - but not the coil's problem. The spark plug wire is usually the first one to get unusual tension on it, and if it isn't screwed in tight to both the plug cap and the coil it causes just this symptom. Sometimes just releasing it from the clip that holds it to the frame cures the issue.

Only a Suzuki Burgman 400 scooter is built to carry 400lbs.
Your 150 is most likely rated @310lbs.
Most two up scooter riders are out there on the road on an overloaded scooter.

I was questioning whether replacing the coil would remedy the problem.

Really? The owners manual in my Liberty 150 says "kerb weight 255 lbs and weight limit is 682 pounds." I thought that meant it could take 400+ lbs.

Me, I don't trust Piaggio's figures.
I'm not able to check right now - but I suspect that whomever wrote that manual may have simply added together the load limits printed on the sidewalls of those skinny Maxxis' tires.
Tire load limits are not the same as scooter load limits - but I'm no expert.

Looking at that single rear shock....and that "hope filled" rear drum brake....leads me to doubt that anyone should be riding with 417lbs on the Liberty's seat.

MP3 500 gross can handle 1000 lbs.
Scooter itself weighs less than 600, so....

Replacing the coil would mean re-connecting the HT lead to the coil, and it's that action that is the usual cure.

Y'know Buster - I see what you mean.
The figures on the spec. plate on our Liberty's agree with you.

OK then ---- 427 lbs is what it can take for a load according to Piaggio..

....with a single rear shock and a drum rear brake. Exciting!

I'm going to see if I can get an answer from Piaggio HQ in Manhattan. They answered my tech question yrs ago (valve clearances - "manual or sticker in scooter?" "Sticker" they said, is more up to date than is the manual)
