But what's holding the throttle cable now? It looks like it's just friction between the cable and the carb mount? I would be worried that after a few good bumps this setup will work itself loose.

The threads are supposed to be on the outside of the mount to anchor the cable sheath while the inner cable is being pulled during throttle (like the image KevinT had shown). Then it gets clamped down with the nut(s) to make sure the cable doesn't go anywhere.

Hardware store to the rescue!
leave the temp fix for now. GET the OEM carb from the seller. clean the oem carb.

if you completely disassemble it and taking out the mixture screws, FIRST do 1/2 turns on them IN till all the way seated. Note that number , now you can completely unscrew them and properly clean all those ports. reassemble, run those mixture screws all the way in and back them back out the amount you noted.

and DO NOT use anything sharp or damage the brass for the mixture seat or screws. just use spray carb cleaner let soak and spray again, do this 2-3-4 times and only use low pressure air to dry.

Harry, what an interesting question!

I realize I don't even know what I don't know about the Vespa world.

Today I rode my Vespa with the Chinese carb.
Started right up and ran perfectly.

So what if I do nothing??
How long does this sweet running machine last? How much warning do I have? Does it slowly stop running well or fail precipitously? Am I days, weeks, months or years away from carb collapse? How long does a $25 carb stay lovely?

And then what? Do I just have a new $200 Keihin waiting on the shelf?

And how much trouble is the swap? Can I do it in an hour? Will the Keihin work with no adjustments? Or will I spends days trying to unravel the secrets? Or perhaps pay an expert to tune magically?

To say nothing of the options if the original Keihin shows up in the post.

There is one thing I like about my lovely red Vespa of today. I turn the key and she starts. Always has.

Help me keep that going.

Thanks all.

I had a 2014 lx50 4T that I bought sight unseen.I't had 55 miles on it, sat in there back yard covered up for a little over 4 years.I had to put a new carb on it and repair wiring harnesses because of mice.I sold it in Jan 21 ( what a mistake) and bought a new fuel injected one. The one I sold was Rosa red (894) like show room condition. Not a scratch.I will look tomorrow and see if I have a factory carb. Cm158004 or Cm 158005 that I bought from Scooterswest.I can't remember if I gave the extra parts to the person who purchased it. Thanks

The real question is - does your scooter still run and perform smoothly? If so, buy yourself a beer . A rebuilt Keihin carb and a replacement Piaggio throttle cable cable can be a project for another day - when/if needed.

Everyone has an opinion of what they would do, me included. Mine is based on my distaste for departing on two wheels and returning on two feet. I'd rather fix something when it's convenient for me instead of having the machine dictate when that happens.

Assuming the OEM carb shows up in the mail, follow the post above about counting the turns on the screw until (lightly) seated and then setting it up that way after cleaning. Cleaning a carb is no big deal and shouldn't take very long. Likewise with replacement. I'd want to put it back to the way it is supposed to be. Less chance of having to use my feet!

Thanks Harry for looking.

Buying a new Vespa would have been so dull in comparison.

I have learned a ton this way and I love tinkering.

Still wondering what will become of the Chinese carb over time if I leave it for a while. How quickly do they turn to crap? Is anyone happy with them over time?

Cheers

Even a low cost Chinascoot lasts for at least a year or two, so I suppose a low cost China-built carb ought to last that long as well. If I were you, I would rebuild that Keihin carb now while you are not rushed and keep it on the shelf until you need it.

My Keihin Carb is back......Maybe.

Yesterday the box arrived from the seller with a carb in it. But, is it mine?

The seller may not know that on May 5, I took a photo of the engine compartment before the carb was switched out. I'll post below three photos.

The carb on May 5
The carb he sent today on July 2
The carb he sent today with ID numbers.

Obviously, the carb he sent does not look the same.
Remember my 2015 primavera 50 had 197 miles on May 5

So, In two months, could this Carb really be mine? Seems not likely to me.

That is interesting. Maybe he took a lot of pictures of the scooter when it was new to him and then re-used those pics in the ad you saw? It "might" clean up nice but it's the inside that matters most.

I personally took all of these photos.

I have the one of the engine compartment by accident on the day I first saw it because I was photographing the VIN number and got the engine and the carb in that shot

All of this is nuts. Which specific part are you referring to?

The seller still is playing games. I sent him these photos, and at first he played dumb and then said, "ok send it back". And that is all.

So he's asking me to send it back without promising to do nothing in return.

So, here's my plan. Dealing with this guy is not necessary and life is too short to put up with being jacked around with unreliable people. A brand new Keihin carb is at most $250. I'll just buy a new one and never deal with this guy again. And I get to review him on Facebook Marketplace.

I feel better already.

The part where you took the photos and the guy seemed like he was innocently caught and was going to be helpful but in the end he was not.

I got the impression this was a private "as-is" sale. Is that not the case? I guess it's not clear why the seller installed carb, petcock, etc when you raised concerns in the first place?

Unless you bought the bike with some kind of warranty agreement, it sounds like you may be right it's time to cut your losses and move on.

It's a long story. But it is an "as is" sale. He had offered to send the original carb and I was excited to get it back. I doubt I will now. Maybe it has value on EBay. He sounded like he wanted to help. He knows I'm a Nubie. He doesn't know I have all of you to ask.

The scooter runs so darn well, it would be hard to mess with that by pulling the currently installed carb.

It's probably the same carb. It more than likely sat out in the rain. New carb is $190. Is it worth $190 to fix a bike that starts and runs well?

Seeing the poor installation job including the misalignment and wire tie mounting of the throttle cable and fuel petcock? Yes, if it was mine I'd fix it correctly. But to each their own.

File this under surprise endings. If you bother to read the ending, it's not likely worth your time. Fair warning.

Seller in "as is" sale of 2015 Primavera 50 with 137 miles to me, swaps Keihin carb for Chinese knockoff as part of tune-up, and the scooter ran great and still does. The Keihin carb must have sat unused a ton.

I ask for my Keihin back and he eventually sends me a rusty old Keihin carb 2 months later. Not mine.

I ask for my actual carb and nothing happens. I prepare to have to live with that but bug him by text occasionally. A few times he promises to send but doesn't. I'm stubborn and it becomes a Challenge. We are now 4 months post purchase. Scooter and Chinese carb still running great.

Last week I told him I needed to know when it was shipping because I needed to order a cake. The cake was for celebrating MY carb coming home. I would send him a piece if he liked cake.

The carb arrived 2 days ago. He asked for his rusty carb back and the cake!

There you go. Any reputable shop(or owner) should at least show you the used, replaced parts if you want to keep them. But you got it back, so you're good. When you find some down time, take it apart, clean it up and put it on the shelf in a sealed plastic bag after misting with some WD40. If the China carb craps out, or you just get antsy, you will have one to change out.

Well, while I agree with this course of action, that's not actually what he's got.

He has one chintzy part installed that works but that might be expected to break down, and one OEM part that wasn't functioning when removed and that probably needs some kind of work. MAYBE a thorough cleaning will set it right, but maybe not…the grey area of "unreliable spare" is an unfortunate twilight zone.
