Just completed a trip to the 49th state, flew to Anchorage from Chicago, rented a car, and made the loop through Denali, Fairbanks, Glennallen, Valdez, Homer, Seward, then back to Anchorage. We got there right as it was warming up, so folks were generally in a good mood everywhere we went. The food and beer were excellent, and the weather was almost perfect. The wildlife didn't disappoint, either, we saw quite a few bald eagles flying around, as well as moose, bear, and even an otter. I didn't get a chance to ride a PTW, maybe next time. If you get the chance, I recommend a visit!

One of our best meals ever was fresh Halibut in Homer Alaska. I would love to go back and ride scooters or motorcycles.

Looks like a great trip. In the canned trip vs. go it alone dichotomy, I'm with you. Alaska cruises seem pretty popular, but I don't know if it's being more cheap, or independent, but discovering at my own pace usually wins the day.

Alaska is beautiful. My Aunt lives on the island of Sitka and has for decades. Seward, as in Seward's Folly, is a distant relative of ours.

In fact, I am wearing my Seward Brewery tee-shirt today. We went for a week in 2018. Did a similar itinerary but we based ourselves from a cabin in Salcha (near Fairbanks). It was an amazing trip. I second wmak's recommendation.
