Excellent job Fledermaus!! You did a nice job. I'd be proud of that work, you should be too. Don't forget to wipe the joints down with a rag. A plumber told me to do that years ago. In response to my question, "Why?", he replied, "The flux can degrade the joint over time." Right or wrong, now I just wipe them down to get the excess flux off.

I've never heard it called anything but "sod-er".

Best

Thanks for the reminder.....may have done it anyway, but YouTube made the point...as well as edifying me on the proper pronunciation of sauld-er.

And okay, I'll accept the praise. Not bad anyway for the last time being a dozen or more years ago....

Because the L is silent.

How do you pronounce "would"? Or could, should, calf, half, chalk, talk, or walk?

And if that's not convincing enough for you, there's this: "solder" comes from Old French soudure.

Better question: how do you pronounce "Colonel"?

English, it's a funny thing, innit?

Well he got the job done, kudos mate... Im sure the solder/sodder copper option was cheaper than the sharkbite option in terms of materials and since you enjoyed doing the work that cost can't be quantified.
Wonderful to know you can do it & feel good bout it...

Not in English English! It's now an English word, not French, so not silent 'h's. Razz emoticon

I hold it as self-evident that an educated Englishman should know better than to try to find consistency in the pronunciation of English.

As for frost free pipes I find don't always do the job. Better to put a ball valve with a release drain.
I just installed a hose connection in the front of a neighbors brownstone.
Used a bunch of sharkbite valves and PEX pipe to make the connections and now he has a garden hose in the front and when winter comes he can drain the pipe and shut it off.
SharkBite is the single greatest invention of the 20th century. I just replaced an outside spigot that leaked terribly with one set up with a Sharkbite attachment. I didn't have much pipe left after cutting off the old spigot. The Sharkbit slid on, screwed it fast. works like a charm.
I also used flexible Sharkbite piping for my water softener about 15 years ago. holding like a champ. I've sweat/soldered pipe before. I can do it. I just don't need to any more.

I haven't looked down thread, but an alternative is cut plus Shark Bite fittings.

And you mentioned propane earlier. MAPP gas. It's hard to develop enough heat with propane.

I have installed 3 outdoor faucets and repaired inside pipes using Sharkbite fittings. They work on copper pipe and PEX pipe. They have a 25 year warranty.

One of the outdoor faucets I recently installed was a frostless unit made by Sharkbite that was already equipped with a Sharkbite fitting. It was a quarter turn valve which my wife requested. Great products.
This it the answer. Unless you want to go with the Vespa (old technology) method of solder crap.

The plumber who fixed my shower used Pro Press fittings. Excellent, but not so good for the DIY-er -- the tool costs $1300, he said.

The home I sold in January was one of the first in my city to have soldered copper water pipes. When the plumber had finished the installation he told me he had sold his pipe threading machine. "I won't use any galvanised pipe ever again!"
37 years later they were as new - aside from a brown patina on the outside.
New copper pipes are much thinner though.

I use (for outdoor) Tee compression fittings on plastic pipe. Very resistant and if desired there are quick gluing joints

Reasonably good. I've done a lot more of that than plumbing. OTHO, considering it's hidden in a basement closet behind a shelf, I'm inclined to just put a piece of quarter inch plywood over the opening and call it a day. Who knows, in 50 years someone might want to install a new faucet......
