So another thread piqued my curiosity and I pulled up the technical data sheets for Motul 710 2T and Motul Scooter Power 2T. Contrary to my suspicions, it appears they are not the same thing, at least not exactly. If I'm interpreting correctly, the 710 has a little more viscosity, a significantly lower flash point, and a slightly less generous additive package than the Scooter Power. From what I've seen, the 710 generally is a little cheaper than the Scooter Power. Of course, viscosity is a balancing act between flow and resistance to shear--more isn't necessarily better. I also wonder if flash point makes much difference when 98% of the fuel is gasoline, which has a flash point well below zero. I also wonder about the importance of additives when it is all getting burned anyway.

Any thoughts on whether the scooter specific stuff is worth a little extra dough?

Looks like the Scooter Power 2T is injection only, but the 710 goes both ways.

Wow an oil thread! With all the info from old old threads I thought it was over. Guess not lol. The evolution from mineral oil, to two stroke oil, and now synthetic two stroke oil is real. As long as it is synthetic it is the best.

Man, I love Project Farm videos on YouTube. That guy does some interesting tests.

As for oil, I wouldn't sweat the difference between the two Motul(s). As long as you are buying a good quality oil you are going to get long life out of your internal parts.

I'm not even going to mention my oil of choice and how it has performed awesome over the years under hard use, because really my experience is just anecdotal evidence. A sample of one doesn't make for good data analysis.

good advice.

also: buy a name brand 2T oil from your local motorcycle shop; they sure would appreciate your business.

My apologies. In hindsight, I probably should have realized any question about oil, no matter how tightly focused, was likely to turn into another useless oil thread. Moderators, feel free to delete this one.

Not entirely useless, now you should know that if you like Motul, you need to stick with the 710 unless you have autolube, then you can use either.

Don't they both do either premix or autolube?

Don't know from personal experience - here's Motul's opinion, can be used, but seems designed for direct injection. Probably safe enuff I suppose, but extra cost probably not beneficial for premix :
