The answer is, it depends. Some years on some days you have a great day of riding and get into the hotel by early afternoon. Heck, in 2016 I woke early and was on the road about 5am. I had a beautiful ride full of sweepers where myy only concern was that early on a Sunday morning in Wyoming (I think it was) that gas stations were not open and the automated pumps I found required a co-op card to activate. I had spare gas so not a huge concern and I did find a place open eventually. I reached the final checkpoint in time for brunch. wleuthold arrived about 15-20 minutes later o join me as I got the last table from the after church rush.

Then you have days like today with 525 scheduled miles and 40-50 shown as dirt but ended up well over 100 milesof dirt. Good riders like DeBinChe (2014 winner),Lindia Hurley, GoPam and at least a few others has either crashe's OR serious damage to their scoots. The least serious are like feb31st abs and speed sensors damaged by sprayed gravel to dash on a GTV coming off the handlebars from the rough roads. We found the cause of my melted wiring harness, the exhaust rattled lose directing hot air to the wiring harness on the rough roads earlier. Riding in the trailer on yesterday's gravel roads caused the clamp to completely fall off. I'm lucky the bolts didn't snap.

It depends how you ride it. If you take the competition seriously then it's rather high on the stress. But even in full tuck and WOT there is lots of time to take in the views and the way the landscape changes. In fact, sometimes you have to force yourself to take that in to keep you from trying to calculate the fatigue cycles on the crankshaft (EG. I'm on day 6 and running at 8000rpm, have been doing that every day for ~8hr, so at that pace the crank should snap in two in about... NO NO NO look at the mountains...)

There is time at the end of most days, but not all days.

For the riders who are actually in it to win it, so to speak, it is constant stress.

That said, there are fleeting moments of it that are -- at least for me -- euphoric. The camaraderie in the parking lot at the end of each day is utterly priceless.

So the issue day before yesterday was indeed the spakr plug cap. It was looseand I couldnt make in not be loose so I changed it. All good on that front no more cutting out.

I also checked my coolant and it seemed low. I think I overfilled. Later yesterday it boiled over like mad, but I got pulled over when the temperature spiked and before the engine light came on. Let it cool, topped off with dasani. An awesome support driver who is not my support driver followed me until I was confident of how she was going to react.

Went to max temp twice again but didn't need more fluid. I just waited and went a little farther. Rolled into wherever we are on our own power. Just watched some video and will be checking if there is a coolant leakthat I can find. Just had the coolant flushed before the cannonball. I plan to go to a grocery to get real distilled water to keep with me today. And I'm leaving about 2 hours earlier this morning.

So while I'm not in the ride it till it explodes camp. I guess I am somewhat risking that today. Oh, and i'm one of those that forwent the dirt yesterday. After looking around the parking lot, I think that was a good call.

Keep thinking the good thoughts for us!

Oh it is definitely a leak. Would electrical tape, duct tape or amalgamated work temporarily?

Oh crap can this be a hose or is it a fuel pump. Or do I need to take it apart to tell?

Oh, that sucks. That's definitely coolant. You can rule out the fuel pump.

Start with a flashlight and see if you can tell where it's coming from, poking around from below and from inside the engine compartment. Also, check to see if it is leaking out of the reservoir / fill cap. I've had a failure that pushed coolant out of the reservoir cap, which then leaks under the floorboards.

Knowing where this leak is coming from will go a long way to diagnosing the problem.

How long did it take for that much liquid to leak out? Knowing that will narrow things down a bit as well.

The stuff at your feet is probably coming from the cap on the reservoir.

The coolant coming out of the pump is a bit more worrisome, as it indicates that the water pump seals have gone (depending on how much is coming out). That might be be a problem, or it might not be, depending on how bad the seals are. Fixing it on the road is pretty difficult if you don’t have a spare pump ready to go, so your only choice might just be to ride it and see what happens.

What were the conditions when the bike overheated? Was it really super hot, or just moderately warm? I’m wondering if there’s a lurking problem in there that caused the bike to overheat in the first place.

Also, now would be a good time to inspect your oil to see if you can see coolant in it.

That’s pretty bad news. My guess is the water pump is gone, and that might be why you overheated. Does the bike run? Does it get hot without being pushed hard?

Can the pump be removed from a retired GTS (cdwise's etc) and reinstalled on Kim's?

I’ve never actually changed a water pump, so I don’t think I can speak authoritatively on that. Let me see if I can find some info. I’m sure someone has posted a how-to.

I don't suppose there is a video on changing your water pump.

Should these have been checked when I had the coolant flushed and what not? Or are they just good till they're not anymore.

I didn’t think there was cross-compatibility, but berto might be right here -- this kind of seems to indicate the covers, at least, are the same. Not sure about the stator inside of it, though.
