Hearing a noise when I let out the clutch in first gear. It’s a 63 GL with a p200 motor. I rebuilt the clutch a few months back. The noise only happens for a second or two when I’m starting from a dead stop in first gear. I don’t notice any noise when I’m using the clutch in 2nd, 3rd or 4th. It almost sounds like the plates are touching the clutch cover.

From the video (never the best sound quality) it's very "rattly" sounding - are you sure it's related to the motor at all and not something like the license plate or some other loose bit slapping when the vibrations hit just the right frequency+power?

A question: does it do it in neutral if you mimic the clutch motions and acceleration?
A question: does it do it from start in in 2nd? (you kind of said not, but I wasn't sure if you mean while riding or actually using a different gear in the same scenario)

You might pull the clutch cover to see if there's any sign of rubbing, in case you have bearings going and you're getting too much play under certain load conditions

*edit* you know, I listened again and I'm sure if it was a loose part rattle (e.g., the plate) you'd hear it when you rev. Sorry. I'd be curious about the answer to those two questions above, but I'd probably go straight to popping the clutch cover and taking a look

Clutch completely worn out? How long since it was changed?

I tried engaging the clutch from a stop in 2nd gear and it definitely made the same sound, then I “feathered” the clutch lever while the scooter was moving in 2nd and I got the sound again. It seems to be making the noise at the moment the clutch begins to disengage, and I’m guessing now that it has nothing to do with which gear it’s in.
I pulled the clutch cover off and there are no marks on the cover.
The clutch and the motor were just recently rebuilt, new bearings, seals etc.
I did the work myself and I am not the greatest mechanic!
I’ll pull out the clutch and see if I did something wonky with the installation

Sounds somewhat similar to mine. The clutch basket expanded, letting the retaining ring slip off. When I removed the nut, the basket and springs went flying.

Sounds to me like the usual problem where the brass bush slips on the base plate. Since you’re pulling the clutch out check it if it’s loose or tight on the base plate. Also use a bit of Loctite 603. I now replace them all with a reinforced one from BGM or SIP…

I’m not sure where I went wrong here, but the first metal plate that I removed is badly damaged. It looks as though I put the clutch back together without engaging the notches on that plate, causing those notches to get bent out of the way when the clutch was disengaged. I’m surprised the clutch still worked

Are all the tabs still attached? Make sure no metal has gone down to the gearbox oil…

All the tabs are still attached. I guess I got lucky this time! There is a gap but it is the same as on the undamaged steels.
Glad I don’t have to split the cases.
I ordered a new steel for the clutch.
