Apologies if this has been done, but I didn't see it anywhere.

I'm not a fan of cover songs ... not normally. There are a few out there that deserve recognition for one reason or another. Obvious examples would be Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt" or Shatner's "It Was a Very Good Year", both for different reasons.

A friend on another forum shared this one and it was too good to pass up. For reasons.

What are your best / worst examples of cover tunes?

Something I recently came across.

In case I did not embed it correctly, it is Oasis doing The Who's My Generation

This has been a favorite for a long time

Ball of Confusion by Love and Rockets. Not sure if its better than the original (to me, the original is by The Temptations) but love them both.

And if you are into L&R, you might like this one

That Bauhaus cover is one of my all time favourite cover versions.

Running a close second is Frankie's version pumping new life into an otherwise workaday classic...

The live version is the dog's, but yet to find a decent video of it.

I play in a band called "Strange But Surf" since 2004. We are strange as Instrumental Surf Bands go, most notably in the fact that we do not always play traditional Surf Songs. We also do many original and sing occasionally. This is from our most recent show, about 3 weeks ago. I hope you enjoy. Stay strange my friends...

I guess some of my favorites are among the aforementioned "obvious" choices, including Hendrix's cover of Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower", Joe Cocker's "With A Little Help From My Friends", and Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah". Johnny Cash's "Hurt" always gives me goosebumps!

The most haunting, to me, are Sinead O'Conner's cover of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2U"

and Gary Jules' cover of Tears for Fears' "Mad World" (which I first saw in a video game commercial, of all places!)

Then there's a perennial favorite Joan Jett and the Blackhearts' cover of The Arrows' "I Love Rock and Roll"

Which was then covered by Brittney Spears (badly? You decide)

Worst? No question from my point of view...

Yep, I've watched them for many years. I was going to mention them, but most replies were of mainstream covers. There are a lot of fantastic covers on YouTube by complete unknowns that are better than some of the crap on the radio...

I'm a big fan of Danny Elfman, and by extension, I also enjoy a bit of Oingo Boingo. Somehow, I just can't recall hearing the original Beatles' "I am the Walrus" before discovering the cover by Oingo Boingo. Hearing the original sounds weird to me now.

Though Dobsons original is pretty good the Dead's live version of "Morning Dew" is one of my favorites. It is also my 5 year old grandson Wes's favorite song right now. He likes good guitar.
