John, there's one more Super G available from the team order we did when they came out. They came with the improved pistons and the center plug CNC head. If Terry's still in Greece and can bring it to the US when he gets back, I can ship it to him...

My DR130 on the smallie was a lark by comparison. that's what's mostly holding me back from just cleaning up this malossi 166 and running it - which is still cheaper than any new kit. will it jet in easy enough on the 20.20? I'm assuming with a tame pipe and the reed valve it probably will. that's still on the table. But I think starting with the 150 is easy. swapping top ends later is easy. |

That clutch seal looks wrong to me. Newer cases usually had the metal one. I assume you'll be replacing the seals so check if there's a groove or not on the seal's seat...
If there's a groove you go with a rubber one, if not you need a metal one. Metal one needs a 0,5mm shave cause if you install it flush it will rub on the bearing's center race and pop out...

If you’re planning to build this engine, run it for a little while in the 10” PX, then swap it over to the 8” VBB, I’d focus on the gearing. Just sayin.

Thanks SaFis - I will report back. I've just ordered a standard Stella rebuild kit from Scooter Mercato so I hope the seal I get matches the cases I have . I didn't pop any bearings out yet as you see. I like to have clean cases to work - so much nicer.

so gearing...
looks like 21-68 primaries tree ratios 12-13-17-21 (standard) loose gears 57-42-38-35 (4th gear like P200 instead of P125) I hate the 35t 4th, that will need to change to 36t. That sucked for hills on a 200, it will suck again here. The primaries are OK if I use the P150 top end, but 22 tooth clutch will be better for anything kitted. Seems like at least a T5 4th should be ordered. If you go to 8", you need primaries to cut the revs, looks like 23-65 like a P200 pretty much matches the RPM for MPH. Can you run P200 primaries in the small case? I think so. It already seems to have a 7 spring clutch. That will be the plan for later. |

One of the great things about having parted out that Stella is I have doubles on most stuff, so the fear factor on trying stuff goes down. The glove box on the px didn’t want to close right, and I had to remove it to do a bit of rust management before fitting a rubber leg shield bead anyway. So I decided to make it fit by selectively bending in appropriate places. Fits much better now! The leg shield I just sanded and put a bit of primer on the open rust before putting on the rubber. Looks much better.
Of course one glove box screw/nut was rusted into place and required Dremel work - doh! 5 minute job becomes 1 hour job...

Px engine exploration …
Stator wiring looks fresh, flywheel has good magnetism, cdi looks a bit worse for wear. Bore looks clean but looking down the intake you can see why the crank won’t move….

Looks like a great project..are you going with a barn find (survivor) look finish when your finished...or are you going for a pebble beach refurbish/restored look...?

The look we are going for here is worn in former scooter boy bike. I will have to do a paint job on a fender and the cowls, thinking burgundy as the red on the Stella cowls actually looks decent. Chrome crash bars will appear later. There’s too much work to go full on restore. Body is decent but not immaculate. It should be a solid runabout.

So tell me, are there big differences in 2 port vs 3 port cases? This vnx engine looks hard (crusty!) and I have a 2 port motor also that could be build number 2 after the Stella engine…

I had all the P series stuff from scooterhelp, but found these yesterday. Very useful for my stella engine and stash of stella parts, and for the unique aspects of the arcobaleno - mine is 125, but this parts book should cover most differences from the regular P series book I have.
https://powersportsoutlet.com/image/catalog/pdf/STELLA-CATALOG.pdf https://scooterworks.com/assets/PDF/PMVLX%20Vespa%20Service%20Manual.pdf I'm definitely a parts book guy, I want them printed and at hand in the shop. |
