it looks like the px lusso (mine) and t5 use some funny alternate parts, some of which are not in production...

That looks good as new! Did you also use some of that vinyl repair paste stuff they used to sell As Seen on TV, too?

So I used a 3m vinyl repair kit from O'Reilly that I had sitting around. The adhesive had dried out but the color bottles that you use to make the repair were still good, it's been a while. Shoe Goo is pretty good for attaching the backer and filling the gap. I repaired a small tear on my Ninja seat a while back and it has held up, so I think this will work. It's not perfect in the light but it won't grab your attention either.

scooterist - thanks but I've got 2 of these Stella ones already, and I'm good with them...

Oh - and I would have polished the chrome on the strap holders but my 20+ year old bottle of chrome polish seems to have dried up!

BTW don't forget to check which staples are loaded in your gun - I had 1/2" in there and poked one through, had to go back and put 1/4" in the gun to fix it Razz emoticon.

I still have to repair a sprint seat I got for the VBB in the trading fest as well from hibbert. Beautiful seat, I'm confident it will work out now that I did this one.

engine parts arrived!

I'm doing the whole check the stack thing for clearance, but I see that the spacers are totally different on EFL/Stella and so I'll have to go look up what the allowed spacing is and what the available spacers are.

The clearance is tight (0.09mm) according to the old specs.

My question is that these gears appear to be different - my old and new 4th side by side. The old is 0.390" (9.9mm) thick on just the gear part, and the new is 0.435" (11.0mm). I double checked and yes I did order the EFL version and I think we got it, but I'm not sure why these look different so I'd like a sanity check here. Do we need more pics to somehow confirm that yes this is efl?

I’ve swapped in a EFL 36 tooth (short 4th) in every single one of my P/PX 200’s (all of them have been converted over to EFL transmissions). I seem to recall the EFL 36T 4th gear to be noticeably thicker than the EFL 35t gear. I think i have a 36T 4th gear in at least 4 or 5 scoots?...I’d have to go over to my shop and count scooters to make sure though.

(Waiting for gear shims…)

Lever install, I thought the lower hole was threaded, but if so these are both stripped… best I can do is get the nylock on there and hope it’s ok to allow it all to turn? Ok or ideas?

Washed the bike and had a look. The floor has clearly been abused by center stand sitters. It has bent the shit out of the floor, and here it is actually torn through a bit. I’m thinking when I get to the floor to flatten it out and do metal brackets between the floor and center stand? The floor will be wire brushed, sanded, treated, and maybe owatrol oil or painted. Then covered by a px mat 🤣.

All right I’m thinking we do have to do something on the stripped lever holes based on this:

clutch and brake lever/ headset problem

My first guess: jb weld the nuts to the headset or tap to a larger size and adapt a screw and nylon bushing.

I have both of those on 4 of my scooters...except that i used their upper plates that have the built in loop. https://www.scooter-center.com/en/luggage-loop-td-customs-vespa-px-sprint-rally-t5-125cc-pk-v50-pv125-et3-vnb-stainless-steel-3331714?number=3331714

The underneath centerstand plate is nice, but at 2mm thick AND being stainless steel, it will distort a little bit (i scale in around a $155). I'd like to see a plate that's at least 3mm thick, but preferably 4mm. But that's just me. Something under there is better than nothing. It also be very simple to fab up your own stainless plate as well.

You might try a timesert instead of a coil. Timesert's are solid and may offer a bit more support.

A first try at feathering out and primer, but there are areas that clearly need more feathering. I was surprised by the flash rust and hurried up and resanded it off and hit it with etching primer to stop it. I didn't have a good plan though, and do some of it got botched up while trying to kept the rust off the rest.

I will take it back out and rework the rough spots before getting into real primer phase.

New shim arrived, .3mm clearance = time to build!

Wet sanded primer with 400, found a few spots where I went through to etch primer, added a spritz more coverage, will hit with 600 next.

Ordered center stand reinforcements.

Title arrived today from Saints Cycle, time to think about heading to DMV but need to locate a loaner carrier, modkuo has the one I last used, will need to hit up local friends or Craigslist.

Front fork question - when I drop it to put this fender on, can I plan to reuse the fork bearings or will I need to do new bearings and races?

So long as they're not worn, you can re-use the bearings and races. They should be caged bearings, so no adventures in loose greasy bearings shooting across your workshop, somehow leaving greasy trails and disappearing entirely at the same time.

Thanks chandlerman. I will protect them when i take it apart - I may need to stick the Stella fork in there to keep it a roller while I do some fork cleanup.

I assume that they must be replaced together i.e. no new caged bearing unless you do a new race - that would be typical.

it's not an all-or nothing thing. You only need to replace the races if they show signs of wear, usually dimpling where the bearings have worn into the races. I'd be surprised if you had that situation, though.

just a heads up that getting the races on/off of the fork and out of the fork tube, isn't easy. Once you've got them off, for install shrinking the outer for the fork tube in a freezer bag, and gently heating the inner for the fork to expand it, helps. But I didn't enjoy it, and wouldn't do it again unless I found obvious dimpling/wear (which, to be fair, I did have the first time, motivating the effort)

+1

I had to replace the races on my GL and my VBB and it was a miserable task both times. And assume that you'll need to re-tighten the fork nut afterwards, because you won't get it quiiiiiite on there, so it'll eventually work its way down while riding and cause the front end to shudder when braking.

that's exactly the feedback I was after - if it isn't obviously worn but the bearings are sketchy, I can feel free to do the ball portion only. thanks guys!

I've never dropped a fork except to part the stella and to get the VBB into my rafters. Suffice it to say I've never put one back together at all yet ROFL emoticon .

MV rules. What's funny now is I'm so into this fender thing and watching retrolad on youtube that my enthusiasm for finishing the engine is almost outweighed by my interest in learning these other skills. Nevertheless, I want my bench back!! So buttoning up will begin shortly.

Goes here and holds the starter's bottom. Since you don't have one…

so my new discover today - you can pay licensed mobile inspectors to come to your house and do the DMV verification thing. this way I don't have to haul the bike to the DMV to get the VIN inspection. Without plates I wasn't gonna drive it there and I was having trouble figuring out the logistics of borrowing a carrier, getting the bike to DMV, and getting it back because my daughter is always stealing my ride Laughing emoticon .

This way all I need to bring to DMV is papers - easy peasy.
