This is simply unbelievable. Buyers need a sanity check.

Maybe we should all be selling on there because they seem to have the lock on rich dudes with huge holes burning in their pockets!

Adding a side car to any random bike adds $10k to its value in the rich retiree market.
It's funny. Those California sidecars that were sold by Vespa dealers in the US in the 1970s-80s, which are probably the best ones ever made for those scooters - no one ever wanted them. Anyone I've known who had a side car used it briefly as a novelty and removed it. They make the bikes basically un-rideable. But none of these buyers seem to want to ride them. |

I can understand the bitterness.
Here you all are - sidecar-less, and now sitting, mouth's agape, questioning your every decision. Your wives are looking back at you like: what?!, as you just stare at them and ponder what if. It's ok. It'l pass. -CM

I’ve had some nice stuff in the past, purchased and enjoyed before such things became collectable and too valuable to risk on the street.
In a lot of ways the increasing value of these lovely old lumps has spoiled them. In the eighties you could go to a rally and count on seeing some properly rare stuff being used hard as the factory intended Now they’re never seen, rarely driven and their value means those of us who would use and enjoy them can’t afford them. |

I had a P200 with a California Side Car and it was indeed unrideable. It pulled to the right when accelerating and to the left when braking. My whole upper body would be sore after driving it 100 miles. I carried a 50 lb bag of sand so it wouldn't flip on right turns. It wobbled uncontrollable until I fabricated a steering damper. It needed a new clutch and rear tire every 800 miles. I could go on. Everyone thinks a side car is cool until they drive one. |

I used to have some success with Mecum auctions online, buying the odd Yamaha SR500 or Suzuki Titan, at reasonable (for a retiree on a pension) prices.
Since the auctions started getting TV play, the prices have gone nuts, even for pedestrian UJMs from the 70s and 80s. Now I search CL for ratty projects I can afford. |

Going thru front tires and clutches were not worth the hassle of having a hack. Upside was I would show up at a small motorcycle gathering and practically every single lady wanted a ride in that sidecar. It was good in the rain, which it does a lot in SE Florida, but it got old and I sold it after a year. Having to drive a bike with a hack vs riding a bike without is night and day. |
