I bought an e-bike (bicycle) 5 1/2 years ago. It sees almost daily use. For my use (exercise, sight-seeing, occasional trail) it is very practical. I am able to ride hills and trails that I couldn't do with my former mountain bike and my aging body. While it has a throttle, I use it for pedal-assist, generally keep my speed around 10mph, and use the assist to keep the effort steady. I replaced the battery (original) about 10 months ago. It has required only normal maintenance. It folds, will fit in the back of my Honda CR-V, has fat tires (good for sand and gravel), and is comfortable. $1,200 when I bought it.

I also have an inexpensive e-scooter, more like a wide skateboard with a seat, that I use to get mail and take garbage on our small island. It has a top speed around 17mph and a range of 10 to 12 miles. $400. The speed limits on our island are 10 and 15 mph, so it is practical there.

My GTS 300 HPE is the two-wheel conveyance I need for pure riding enjoyment. I have been riding motorcycles since I was 14, and this Vespa gives me the joy of being in the wind. If I felt the need to replace it, it would probably be with another motorcycle.

I haven't come across an electric scooter or motorcycle that would work for my use - if I want to do a 150 mile ride through hills and twisties, I would have to spend a LOT more than what my 2020 Vespa cost... and then it would have to charge overnight to be able to do a quick run into town. The practicality and affordability of an e-motorcycle/scooter just isn't there, yet, for my use. Where the e-bicycle has been there... and for at least 5 years. I am seeing more and more e-bicycles when we are out and about.

People will buy what makes sense for them. Based on questions I get from people when riding my e-bicycle, there is plenty of interest. I have seen a grand total of two e-motorcycles in the wild.

For the record, I am not opposed to an e-motorcycle/scooter. I've had Harleys, BMWs, Goldwings, and others, and am quite happy on my Vespa. I don't need a big exhaust note or a rumble to enjoy a ride. I quite enjoy the quiet of my e-bicycle.

A work friend got an e-adapter for his pedal bike. He told me it got him 12 miles to work, then he'd pull the battery and charge it in his cube for the ride home. Not fast, but it worked for him.

We just got my wife an e-bike so that she could 'keep up" with me. Bloody cheating!

I can see one in my future. I love to ride but the legs won't hold up forever!

Your comment about the e-scooter brought back painful memories. Thank God that I put my helmet on when I decided to check out my new e-scooter last summer. In less than a minute, I hit a microscopic pothole and struck the pavement face first. I didn't dare seek medical care because of the virus. I am fairly certain that I broke several ribs and I destroyed a Shoei X-12 with a Transition shield. So I gave the nasty little device to my nephew.

I have been thinking of getting another e-scooter, perhaps a Unagi...never learn.

I have a cheap entry level RadRunner 1 by Rad Power. It'll do about 25 miles on just throttle (I call it far kid mode.) and around 35ish to 40 miles with assist. I ride it to work mostly at 14 miles each way and on the weekends for silly errands. I really like it so far and at 2500 miles its been very reliable.

Around my way the police don't harass you for riding on the sidewalk and I do follow common courtesy when others are on the sidewalk. And 20mph is fast enough for an ebike. The bonus is I actually feel safer on the ebike when commuting vs. the scooter. Cars are just driving faster and more reckless than usual.

I love my e-bike but I don’t like to ride in the heat, use the e-bike for recreation and exercise only it does not substitute for my scooter or car. When I feel like going for a ride for exercise, I always pick the e-bike over the analog bike because I can go twice as far, and nearly twice as fast while spending even more energy, it makes me go further and exercise harder. When the weather starts cooling, I will be on the e-bike more and more seeing the valley in greater detail than before when using other forms of transportation.

In my mid 40's I cycled round the world with my then 17/18 years old son. I was an avid cyclist and very fit. Wind the clock forward and at 69 my knees were finding reasons NOT to ride my bicycle. I bought an e-bike and now look forward to getting on my bike. It is improving my fitness levels, is amazingly easy on my arthritic knees and helping me rediscover the joy of cycling. I've now had it long enough to have clocked up 3400 faultless miles. I would always recommend an ebike to anyone wanting to cycle, but who hesitates because of fitness, terrain, age or whatever.
