Hi everyone! First time posting here. I am a new vespa owner and just bought a 2015 primavera a few weeks ago. At the time, I didn't know the importance of having the master key and it only came with one blue. I've done a lot of reading about my options and I know someone used to be on here that did keys but my understanding is that he no longer does.

1) I am on the west coast and wondering if there are any key places I can personally take it into to close instead of mailing my one and only key in across the country? Is this a common service among key places/hardware stores?

2) what does the process look like of getting a new ECU unit to start over with my keys?

3) I've read that my scooter can "forget" my blue keys over time.... Is this accurate? If so, it seems like making clones might be pointless and a new ECU unit would be my only option at that point.

Thanks!

When we had our shop, for customers dealing with the same problem, I first sent out the ECU to get it “revirginized”, then install an original set of locks / keys and just reprogram the ECU with the new set of keys (master & service)…

Getting just your service key cloned is a temporary solution…

I bought a Vespa with one blue key and one cloned blue key despite knowing the limitations.
If the ECU forgets the code, I have no recourse and need to call a tow. If I have a red key at home in my teak credenza, I'm almost as screwed only I won't need a new ECU.
VMS can clone your key.

AF1 also does key cloning and immobilizer manipulations if the Austin, TX area is more convenient.

Don't worry, you're far from the first. (As an aside, I don't what people do with their master keys...I mean, they're clearly important to save...I guess they get chucked in a drawer, lost, or deemed just not worth looking for when your ride has lost it's thrill). My first Vespa (LX150) arrived with only a blue key....sent it out for cloning, and we're still all good nearly a decade on.

No, hardware stores aren't going to be able to help you....

As Dooglas was saying, AF1 racing can clone a new Master key from your Blue key for a very reasonable price. Check it out on their website. Currently if you lose or break your Blue key it will be very expensive to get a new one.

If I were in your situation, I would bite the bullet take care of this by mail.

My guess would be that ScooterWest can provide a similar service but I don't know first hand.

No they can't.

They can clone the blue service key, they cannot make a new Master key from it.

It should be possible to purchase the programmable blanks from AF1, then you can take your key to an auto locksmith and they'll be able to cut and clone your original while you wait.

Actually Dooglas didn't quite say that. I said that AF1 offers a cloning service for an "orphaned" blue key. For those in somewhat deeper do-do, I understand that they offer a "re-virgining" service for ECUs which will allow you to pair a new lockset to your existing ECU.

I went back to the website and read it again....it says...

"AF1 Racing Key Cloning For External*** Cut Keys

For Vespa and Piaggio:

'20-'21 GTS 300 HPE (all variants)
'20-'21 GTV 300 HPE (all variants)
'14-'19 GTS 300 ABS, GTS 300 Super ABS
'09-'13 GTS 300, GTS 300 Super, GTS 300 Super Sport
'06-'10 GTS 250, GTS 250 Super
'07-'10 GTV 250
'10-'19 GTV 300, GTV 300 ABS
'14-'20 Primavera 150
'14-'20 Sprint 150
'05-'09 GranTurismo 200
'05-'14 LX 150
all Piaggio with an immobilizer

If you're down to one key (blue, black, or brown, doesn't matter), purchase this service and send your key to us. Once we receive the key, we will clone the special immobilizer chip and cut you a new, ready-to-use, spare key."

So, you guys are right, if you have either a Blue key or a Master key they can make you another Blue key. (not another Master) Which I think is still a pretty great thing, in case you were to lose your current only Blue key.

One more thing that might be said. If you still have a brown/red key that normally means you still have a master key. If that is so, it is not necessary to mail your key off and risk its loss. You can order one or more blanks from AF1 or a local dealer. This allows you to get the blank(s) cut locally using the master as the pattern and then pair the new key(s) using the instructions in the manual.

Wrong again. A cloned Master key will be a new Master key, just without a removable RFID chip.

Plan B
1. Get a new key cut with no chip.
2. Take the old key with the working chip and attach to the antenna permanently inside the
leg shield. The scooter will then start with the no chip key. The security features will be
disabled as long as the key is attached to the antenna.

Plan A, new key from AF1, is a far better solution.

I bought my used BV from a guy that insisted he only had one key (he'd purchased new). Decided to buy it anyway.

Two weeks later got a master key in the mail. Huh.

In my 15 years of Vespa ownership, 5 of them, I have never needed the master key.

I have the master keys for the three I currently own and have has extra keys made once by Jim in Maine. I believe he has retired.

I once bought a blank and tried several times to clone it on the scooter but failed. Bad key, I believe.

If the main function of the master key is to be able to make extra keys, and you can get extra keys cloned from a blue key, then the master stops being very important.

I wouldn’t worry about not having one.

Well Bill....I sorta agree...

He may not have a great need for a Master key, but I would not want to have only one key. If he loses his only key he will be in a bad place.

If it were me I would get a working copy of your blue key made.

I think we agree here.

I always want at least two keys.

Two blue keys are as good to me as one blue and one master.

Three even better.

I only have one fob for my Xmax, and that has me a bit concerned.

If you are buying a bike without the red/brown key, you should offer $500 less due to the cost of a new immobilizer and keyset. That figure is usually enough to light a fire under the seller's ass to find the master key.

You don’t need a new immobilizer if you have a working blue key.

And you can have as many extra keys as you want cloned from the working blue key.

Yes, but the seller may not know that. Even if he does, the buyer can insist that he wants a red master key or he doesn't buy the bike.

I enquired with a local locksmith who said he would not be able to cut the Blue blank, I have the (Red/Brown master) key along with the blue key, I also have a blank still from a while back and I don't wish to visit the Vespa dealership to have them cut the blank (they charge $35 to do that). I wonder if there are specific locksmiths who can/will cut the blanks.

Surely any locksmith can cut the blanks. ACE hardware can do it, FFS. What they can't do is program your ECU for you, if it's a Piaggio blank. However, if you buy a *programmable* blank, then any auto locksmith should be able to clone it to an existing key that the bike recognises.

Two sorts of blanks remember!

+1. My local locksmith was more than happy to cut one for me. Unfortunately I'd purchased the first one without a chip, but he didn't charge for the second cut. Lesson learned. And cheap, at least for the cutting.

Is your key edge-cut or sidewinder cut? Typical edge cut keys are easy to duplicate.

I got the blank from either AF1 or Scooterwest a long time ago. I shall find some other locksmith who will cut it for me, then I shall program it so Ill have a spare.
Thanks for clearing that up, my guess is the local locksmith wasn't willing to do it as I was bringing the blank to him.

When I bought he blank that never worked, I took it to the local locksmith, Dedge’s Lock and Key.

I handed it to the guy behind the counter with the OEM key.

He cut it quickly and handed both keys back to me.

I asked about the charges and he said that there was no charge.

Asked why, he replied that he didn’t sell me anything.

I would have happily paid for the service of professionally cutting the key, but was pleased with his good will.

Considering Bill's key never worked, this might not be a good example to shoot for. :?
The locksmith’s cut was perfect.

Piaggio’s chip wouldn’t work.

Plan B

How do I access the antenna? That scenario sounds ideal to me assuming the chipped key isn't accessible by anyone walking by as I assume it isnt

It requires removing the leg shield to get to the antenna.
