I was a little surprised about just how quiet the Environmentalists were over the last year and a half.

It was a perfect opportunity to draw attention to just how much of a decrease of emissions there was what with the lack of vehicles on the road, planes in the sky and cruise ships on the sea, but I heard nothing.

My feeling is that it says more about them than it does their cause. In the initial months it must have been close to a Utopia for them but they were all strangely silent.

Are you saying that it would be somewhat trite for the Greens to be celebrating the huge reduction in emissions while peoples lives were being put at risk ?

No, I'm just saying that there are priorities over other things that can still be discussed but secondarily. There is no white or black but rather an alternation of choices.
No conspiracy.

We are only exposing personal points of view but this does not mean that some points of view coincide.
If I may have seemed conflicted, I apologize.

In addition I do not pay the "alternative energy contribution" that everyone has on the bimonthly payment and the increases (in kwh) are not applied to me in proportion to the amount of energy sold ... a small additional saving.
The only big problem was that two years ago I had to change the inverter because it burned out (...made in the USA with chinese components... ) and I put an inverter made in Korea (South).
I see you seem to have the contract already for some years. Then indeed probably quite interesting.
We had that here up to a year ago. Extremely expensive for the state. Stopped that a year ago and the sales of solar panels here in BE plummeted.

Exactly.
Now if the benefit of this huge reduction of car traffic on the road would have led to a vast improvement in air quality we would have heard them and very loud.

During the lock down I saw plenty of news about air quality improving. Even before and after videos. I thought this thread was about the price of gas. Talk about sideways.
I think I'll have to stop opening this thread if no one is going to talk about the topic.

You naysayers just weren't paying attention. You really didn't have to be too observant to see the difference. There was a tremendous improvement in the air quality in Silicon Valley, which is (guessing) 60 miles N-S and 20 miles E-W. The relatively clean-smelling air and visual quality was quite remarkable. BTW, I did post about it earlier this year. The air is still pretty clear because most tech workers are working remotely and not driving, consequently there isn't nearly as much traffic as there was last year. There have been other benefits to wildlife.

Gas prices are still relatively high (~$5/gal for 91 octane in Silicon Valley).

It's now $2.97 here. I'd like to know what it cost in TX. When I lived there I was told that there's no state income tax because every barrel of oil produced is taxed. Here in FL. there's no income tax because of tax on tourism. I paid 12.5% for a camping spot in the keys in 2017, Don't know what it is now. Our current sales tax here is 8%.

My argument was that it was a missed opportunity by the Greens not to make more of the reduction in emissions rather than the Scientists pointing it out.

Just sayin.

If your desire was to reduce the amount of emissions in the atmosphere generated by something as abundant as internal combustion powered vehicles and an event happened that unwittingly provided you with your wish you would have through someone from your group would have said - This is exactly what we're aiming for, but they were either too busy doing other things, they missed a perfect chance to take advantage of the situation for their own cause or they ( as a collective ) didn't want to be seen to be taking advantage of a circumstance when so much misfortune was taking place.

It sort of reminded me of an angry dog that keeps barking even through the threat was gone away albeit temporarily.

Just for the record I have nothing against the Green movement but if something provides you with a platform to publicise your cause why wouldn't you jump at the chance ?

In South Africa, the fuel price is regulated by the Department of Minerals and Energy.
It is reviewed monthly.
Here is October's pricing per litre in ZA Rands:

UNLEADED:
95 - R18.34 Inland R17.62 Coast
93 - R18.15 Inland R17.63 Coast
DIESEL:
50PPM R15.52 Inland R14.92 Coast
500PPM R15.49 Inland R14.87 Coast

The difference between inland and coast are due to pipeline transport costs.

ZAR 15.05 = 1US$
ZAR 17.45 = 1Euro
ZAR 20.43 = 1GBP

Please do your own math.
It is far too depressing for me!

I just checked Gas Buddy. In Dallas, Premium is going for $3.33, Regular is at $2.83.

Just checked CNBC. Oil is at $79. Highest I've seen since the lock down. I'm going to get my 6 gal can for some non-ethanol B4 gas goes up.

I think that there is more at play here than the gas tax.
Last I checked, Pennsylvania had one of the highest gas taxes in country. The highest I saw back in August might have been about $4.00/gal.

Maybe they just charge a lot more in California, because everything else is more expensive there?

No, it's definitely CA state tax. But who here remembers a year and a half ago when the price of oil dropped to negative $37 per barrel? Obviously the price of gas at the pump is not too married to the market price of crude or else they'd have been paying us to fill up.

Odd isn't how quickly gas prices rise when there's demand but how very slow they go down when there isn't.

Talking of which I got a tip from the other half this afternoon that the local Supermarket had fuel so I jumped in the Hyundai and brimmed it with no queuing.

I got home and grabbed the Royal Enfield then did the same while jumping the car ahead without pissing too many people off.

This was the first time in 3 weeks that I havn't had to leave the house at 5am or queue for an hour to get fuel.

Welcome to the United Kingdom.

Tax on Fuel and Booze,

Having had the opportunity to live in Europe, I was aware of the hefty tax
on some items. I gave my Italian Landlord (Gennaro D'Amore) a bottle of
Crown Royal Whiskey (In the Blue Velvet Bag). He was really pleased and
thanked me on numerous occasions.

I had bought the Bottle of Crown Royal at the US Navy Exchange. We pay
USA prices with out any taxes. I then realized why Gennaro was impressed.
It would have cost him a bundle.

Example, I could purchase a 750 ml bottle of Beefeater's London Dry Gin for
.85 cents.

That is the latest input from Lake Wobegon Minnesota,

Cheers,

Bob Copeland

Today in the USA Beefeater's is $23.50 a bottle. Years ago, while I was in Italy it was about $12.00 a bottle. The difference between $.85 and $12.00 was all tax.

Challenge accepted.

I only saved $0.20 a gal but I'd bet cash money the taxes weren't raised last night. I've been studying how the price of oil affects gas prices(not always right) since the Iraqi Army invaded and occupied Kuwait. I saved a lot of money that day.
People don't realize that the lock down can't be compared to another lock down because we haven't had one before. Apples and oranges.

It's true. In NL the KNMI noticed significant lower concentrations of NOx and particulate matter in the air during the lockdown.
Indeed, it was. You are Dutch, so you can read the article.
You will see in February, before the lockdown, the air quality was even better, and there was no trend change mid of March.
That is why they could not conclude the lockdown had a benefit.

It is unreal.

I do not know where "South East Great England of Britishland" exactly is but if not too far from France or Belgium then just hop over and fill the tanks here. Nowhere queing here.

If you look on a map of the UK look for the county of Kent and I'm bang in the middle in a town called Maidstone.

I'm an hour away from France but here's the irony. The closest 3 or 4 service stations on the other side have really expensive gas because they know that people aren't going to go looking for cheaper fuel.

I topped up the RE yesterday with no issues but it really is a gamble over here right now.

Oh, I'm a big fan of Belgium. Spa, Ghent, Brugge, Brussels, Leige and Francorchamp all rate very highly.
