Very funny old British motorcycle safety film. Thought you all might get a kick out of this one. And, does anyone know the make/model of the two British motorcycles in the video? I'm clueless.

I'm guessing Tom's reckless friend is riding a Triumph, but there don't appear to be any clear shots where you can make out the logo.

At this time in the uk you could ride a 250cc motorcycle on L plates , This was changed to 125cc in 1983 .

This is soooooo cool!

And being a relative ignoramus when it comes to motorcycles, I'm clueless as to what motorcycles either Tom - or his wayward (and always-in-a-hurry) 'friend', might be riding.

What I'm curious about is: what kind of scooter is Tom's new 'friend' riding, at the very end of the movie?

According to Wikipedia, the Triumph Tigress was also produced in a cosmetically and mechanically identical version marketed as the BSA Sunbeam. To my eye their lines are gorgeous but, apparently, the scooters suffered from build quality. It was sometimes said (once again, according to Wikipedia) that a Tigress was a joy to own so long as someone else was paying the repair bills.

This photo is of the Tigress's twin, the BSA Sunbeam.

untaxed since 1984, so maybe long gone

I'm intrugued how you can rev and pull away whilst your right hand is stuck out indicating (around 1:25)?

(although I seem to recall on my mates BSA 650 that there was a lever on the left handlebar that acted as a throttle?)

British bikes have the gears on the right and brake on the left. And upside down compared to 'normal' bikes.

Thanks! I enjoyed the film and the classic Brit bikes.

Yet, I'm absolutely sure that Tom's friend is from Italy. His "poor" driving habits wouldn't even be noticed here. Have a look ...

The Triumph is a 200cc Tiger cub, the Matchless a G2, I don’t think its a CSR at it would have had a chrome fuel tank and red paint for extra speed. The BSA group scooters, like the Triumph Tina and Tigress were friggin awful things that came to the market far too late and were very under developed. The four stroke twin in the Tigress made the body panels hot enough to cook your legs while the variator on the Tina like to lock in the extended position, locking the transmission in its highest ratio and rendering the damn this unstoppable.

Crap really...

I once had an unmolested, original 53 Triumph, i gave the bike a full going over before licensing it and by the time I had been over the bike I could tell you why the Japanese were able to take over the market, it really was a sad old out of date desigh the day it was built.

In Naples is a special case and not only for how it drives, let's say that normality is different. Nothing wrong with that, just that it is.

You can’t even depend on them being upside down. My Triumph was right hand gear change, up for up, my Gilera was also right hand gear change, but down for up. At the same time I had these two I had a pair of 350 Jawas, both hand left hand gear changes but one was up for up, the other down for up... as one also had a sidecar with linked brakes and there was also a semi automatic Honda with a heel/toe shifter in the garage I had my hands full keeping my gears and brakes straight.

Not always successfully.

After running that confusing and sometimes unreliable lot for a year I sold a bunch off and have had only two licensed at a time since.

The confusion can be exciting cant it. I was swapping between my Matchless and my CBR400 and had the misfortune to get the gearchange wrong on the 400 and downchanged at 14,000 rpm instead of changing up. I sort of realised as i was letting the clutch out and pulled it in again really quickly. Nothing broke and i didn't fall off but it was definitely a learning moment!

Oh yes! I’m familiar with those tricks. My wife and I were coming up to a curve on my Triumph and I went to give the rear brake a little tap to steady the bike up. Instead I dumped it into third causing a massive rear end slide as I got maximum engine braking from the poor little screaming flat head.

That woke us both up!
