I very much doubt that Moto Guzzi would make anything else but a V - Twin, albeit a liquid or an air cooled unit.

It's the very reason that you buy a Moto Guzzi, because of that very configuration.

Quite mortifying for a firm that built everything from single cylinders to V8 and all the fun in between

But I agree, that is exactly the main reason why there's still such an ancient engine architecture around!

They don't need to do it, they already have it. They just have to adapt it.

I had a Guzzi V7, for less than six months. It was beautiful. Even the stock pipes sounded gorgeous. I thought that it would be a daily driver and it started out that way. But then I made the mistake of taking it on a MC club ride. First thing I noticed was that I could not keep up at freeway speeds. Second thing I noticed was that it was not competent on very technical roads. Now, certainly some of the riding issues were rider related, but, these were roads that I travelled on with my different BMW "R" bikes without issue. Soon the Guzzi became a Ducati Monster, and then a larger Monster; well you know how that progression ends. And yet every time I see one, I remember how beautiful my V7 was. Hmm…. Maybe a Triumph?

The stock exhaust on the Guzzi is pure music.

I think that progression usually ends in a ditch.

Hahaha.. good point.. In my case it ended in a poorly thought out Multistrada 950. I hated it and yearned for the Monster 1200 I traded in. Thankfully a club mate really wanted a 950 Multi. Now I only have the R1200gs. It is the one bike that does it all.

It had some positive moments.

(Not my bike in the ditch, btw -- but it was someone in the group, and a member of MV who used to ride a scooter before they got a bit too big for their britches).

Those days never are.. I "dropped" (read crashed) a Monster 696 and a BMW R1200R within a year of each other. Both in the same fashion, sand in the middle of a corner when leaned over. Glad I wasn't alone each time.

I live in the next county but the roads in his county are not bad at all.

I think it depends on how much of a traditionalist you are when it comes from a brand that has sourced an engine from within the group, then badged it as their own.

Any real enthusiast would know that that particular bike is the one fitted with the ( insert sister brand ) engine and that may put people off because it's not the transverse twin they love.

Engine development from scratch is incredibly expensive so when your volumes are low it would make sense to borrow from within but is that what the customer wants - a Moto Guzzi with an Aprilia engine ?

It's certainly not going to happen the other way around.

What costs less - To continually develop the air cooled V - Twin that you're famous for or do a cam cover swap in the hope that no one will care or notice ?

I do hope that Moto Guzzi don't make anything like the CX 500 as they were slow, heavy and scary to ride in the rain as all the weight was in the wrong place.

Not one of Honda's best.

I did like the 'look' of the CX500 back in the day, especially the 'C' variant, I never rode one though

Factors such as slowness can be subjective, those who are satisfied still enjoy it.
