https://www.quattromania.it/2021/08/18/vespa-piaggio-giorgio-armani-pezzo-collezione-meno-20mila-euro/

On the one hand we have the very famous Piaggio Vespa, a small scooter that has undergone many restyling in its decades-long career.

On the other hand, the Italian fashion brand Emporio Armani, founded by Giorgio Armani himself.

Thanks to a collaboration between the two brands dating back to 2015, the ultra-limited edition Piaggio Vespa 946 Emporio Armani was born with less than a thousand examples put into circulation.

Worldwide - says the manufacturer - there are only 990 of these scooters.

Slightly outside of my price range LOL. That said, I don't doubt they'll sell every one of them.

Maybe I have not explained myself well or in any case the article underlies the thing ...
Those scooters "have already been produced and sold", it was a limited series production.
The value (not so intrinsic) is given by the low number and by the certain traceability to the specimens.
This thing makes this particular model a valuable piece also in terms of investment, in short ... modern antiques.
I pointed it out because the Vespa can also be a bargain even if it is not necessarily old for the number of years accumulated.
PS: Jess, even if I don't know you personally I don't doubt that if you find one at an affordable price, run to get it, a little for passion but also as an investment.

It is virtually impossible to predict what is going to be collectable down the road. who thought the Camaro or Mustang would be worth what they are now in the mid 1960s, or the Pontiac Aztek early this century. Meanwhile, the limited edition Vespa PX150 America edition with a numbered plate on it is worth about what a PX150 without the plate is worth. And the 70th anniversary edition GTS, 75th anniversary edition GTS, Red edition 946 don't really fetch a premium over regular models from the same years. Whenever someone tells you something new is an investment and going to appreciate, just remember Beanie Babies and all the people who still have their entire net worth tied up in a den full of small stuffed animals.

"... I put somebody in charge of finding the cheapest car in the world," Malcolm Bricklin said.
The Yugo was not always viewed so favorably, although its $3,990 price grabbed headlines on its introduction in 1985.
Yugo isn't in the NADA or Kelly Blue Book online price guide, but the car auction website Bring a Trailer sold a Yugo ... for $7,500 in April. Long Island's Hollywood Motors recently offered a 1988 GV for $6,450.

I just read this and the first thing that came to mind was, too bad there wasn't an Emporio Armani Yugo back in the day before people said back in the day.

O.K. O.K. It was not an invitation to buy particular models at all costs but just a curiosity about the Vespa world (this forum is essentially dedicated to the Vespa).
The discourse on the "possibility" that over time some models can turn out to be "also" good investments is mainly linked to the number of (few) produced specimens, and here I can agree with those who say that apart from the version the Vespa 946 in issue has nothing different from that of the series.
As for the reference to cars like Camaro (I suppose the SS) or other models "derived from the series" yes, it is the same thing but there is always an extra difference in value (from what I have seen on TV on programs like Monkey Garage , Salt Lake Garage, Chasing Classic Car and others ...).
Of course, talking about the classic model as an investment is perhaps a bit risky (I € 20,000 for a 946 with the cabbage I fuck them) .
PS: the notes from the "greasy vocabulary" are coming in handy.

There is a hidden meaning in your words, the phrase hides the possibility that what today is considered an economic oddity may change tomorrow. If anything, the danger may derive from an overestimation made on purpose to raise prices on a market that has become exclusive to people who "generally" buy a lot to do business and little for passion ...

I'm for once, thankful about this:
Quote:

I never liked the look, but it did seem a good idea at the time for Piaggio to get rid of old parts in stock..

Personally, I don't believe the Vespa Armani has any feature that does make it special..

To make a collector item, you must offer features that are still wanted and no longer made.. IMO!

20.000 €??? Tell him he's dreaming...

(You must have seen the movie "The Castle") to understand this...

I'm thinking this is probably a good time to sell my 200 mile mint 2013 White 946. Yep, think I'll do that. I'm thinning my herd.

The 946 has always puzzled me. Yes, eye catching styling - but way over priced and really nothing special as a scooter. I suppose I can acknowledge it as a possible collectible, but I would never make room for it as a scooter in my garage.

So, if I understood the text right, someone has tried to sell one of these special editions since 2015 with this price tag, without luck - and this is used as a case example that not everything 'made to be collectible' becomes collectible?

RD350, H-1, CB750, Commadore 64. Who kept theirs? 240Z? That's the one that seems most obvious in hindsight, even though I remember my aunt wondering aloud why anyone would pay $4000 for a Japanese car. These are things that become more valuable over time. None of them were pitched as investments. Franklin Mint stuff was.

well... I've not kept any cars or bikes, but I do have my Commodore 64

It's not really worth much money, compared to the very high price tag originally (costs relative to those days, of course). I doupt it ever will be - but the most interesting part are the original commercial brochyres that I've also kept. Laying out promises how the thing revolutionize your home, liberates time etc... it's been quite a journey, but no doupt Commodore64 and why not also Sinclair ZX81 did play a big role in this.

Oh, and have to give some points to the design - it still works perfectly!

Maybe these could be sold without the engine. Then you would just set them in your living room, or shop, or restaurant and people could look at them. That would still accomplish the primary mission, and would drop the price a bit. You could collect as many different ones as you want.

They said the same thing about Ligabue's paintings ...
It took a few years but now someone who was joking about it at the time is wearing out their guts. :?
Well ... to stay on the subject look for a Vespa 90 SS and tell me how much it is worth (if you find it original).

Antonio Ligabue (or Laccabue) didn't paint the same picture 990 times, then change few stickers and colour and start the same painting again...

Not really the same thing..

But you are right about the 90SS. I wouldn't use one again, or collected, but I can see the appeal in it..

Collector items are strange beasts...

I never understood the 946. It looks nice but a ton of money for minimal performance. They may go up in value sometime but it could take 10, 20, 30 years. In the mean time be ready to drain everything bag it and gas it for storage.

There are so many "special editions" of so many models that collectors pretty much ignore that fact.

Right now the money is in vintage, prices have pretty much doubled in the last 6 or 7 years and have been getting crazy high on some years and models.

Always remember that rarity does not automatically equal value. Sometimes it does and sometimes no one want's a Yugo if you're giving it away.
