So, it's been a few years since I had a GTS and after selling my TMax (too bulky for traffic in Malta) I started looking for a mid-sized 300. The Forza 350 is hideous, the XMax is nearly as big and cumbersome as the TMax, so those wouldn't do; so since I quite like the Vespa and I've always regretted selling my GTS, I went for a "Tweety-yellow" HPE. I am a bit concerned about the oil consumption issue but the agent stressed that if I broke the engine in carefully and used 10w40 (Malta's weather is HOT) all should be fine. Despite his assurances, I've ordered an oil pan with inspection glass to make life easier though. Let's see…

Indeed the X Max has grown beyond its scope, too bad ... Yamaha only has the small Tricity 125/155 and N Max 125/155 valid for Malta traffic; from some points of view it is clear that the Vespa 300 is more traffic-friendly (also other scooters from other brands).

Congratulations on your new GTS. It looks great. I came to Vespa from my Yamaha Majesty and like the Vespa so much better. 100 pounds lighter and oh so nimble.

Imagine that a Vespa 300 weighs 145 kilograms against the 165 kilograms of my "little" Tricity 155.
Congratulations to the new Vespa rider on the purchase.

Welcome to MV, gwynnus!
Just take a peek at the oil every 2nd or 3rd fill-up and your beautiful bumblebee will be fine.

Great looking bike you have there. The Vespa 300 is the best of all worlds. You can hop on the freeway and do just fine, yet the bike is small enough to fit through a 36" side door. First time I saw a sight glass was on my friends, Royal Enfield Bullet. I thought what kind of cheezy nonsense is this? Then, I bought a Burgman 400 which has a sight glass. After a couple of days, I thought " what a great idea". Imagine being able to check your oil without finding a rag and getting crud on your fingers.

Excellent colour choice! Like it.

Don't worry about the oil consumption "so called" issue. I've yet to see one that uses abnormal amounts of oil here in the UK, and I have a lot of friends who have the HPE with substantial miles on the clock ie: 22,000 miles plus in one instance and others with in excess of 16,000 miles. Although I do think they use just the tiniest little bit more oil in normal use than my own GTS euro3 bike and that's just because it's a higher performance motor and completely normal. Because these bikes carry just a tiny amount of oil it's imperative to check it very often. The sight glass oil pan is a good idea though. Good luck and enjoy the bike.

In my opinion when the engine has been running for a few hundred miles then it takes its mechanical tolerances and the oil consumption settles down ...

Gwynnus,

What are the roads like in Malta? Do you have limited access divided highways like we do in the US?

Main roads are okay(ish) - Malta is 17 miles long no highways here.

Welcome Gwynnus !
"Howzit" from the Southern tip of Africa.
I also have a yellow HPE, but I have de-chromed it completely.

Malta is small - about the size of the Pretoria Metropolitan Municipality -
and that is BOTH islands.
Enjoy your HPE.
It is an ideal two-wheeler for your place of residence.

Something must be wrong with my HPE. It hasn't burned any discernible amount of oil. I wonder what I'm doing wrong.

Could it be that they need to be run in very carefully? I'm really making sure of doing that well. Apparently, the engines tend to burn oil if they're used at high revs for prolonged periods - long motorway rides and things like that - so there's not much chance of that happening in Malta

I've seen a dechromed yellow HPE - looks really cool. I'm adding on the the bling (just added the crash bars and I'm thinking of that sloping rear rack next)

Congrats on the new Vespa! Exceptional color choice if I do say so myself...no unusual oil burn on mine, either (2020 bike).
