Hi everyone,

I'm 3 weeks into my first Vespa and loving it. But I noticed an aesthetic issue the other day:

1. The front fender decal wasn't applied totally straight (annoying, but not the end of the world).

2. Upon further inspection, I think the front fender itself might be installed crooked too… or am I just seeing things?

Try moving it around and see if it seems loose. I'll caution you, though, the inside of most fenders is pretty grubby. Yours is fairly new, so the accumulated soot will probably be light.

I think it's just the stripes that are crooked, not the fender. I could be wrong, though.

The tire doesn't look centered in the fender, though the forks/tire looks square with the leg shield
You might loosening the fender mounting bolts & realighn slightly as you tighten

The tire isn't supposed to be centered in the fender, though I can appreciate that one might think it should be. It's offset a bit due to the design.

The decal looks unbalanced because it is thicker on one side than the other, but when you look at it, you expect it to be the same on both sides of the ornament. OTOH, it does look like the fender is a little crooked. Can you have someone take photos of it when you are on the bike, holding it up, off the centerstand?
Also, can you measure the distance from the fender to the edge of the decal? It should be the same on both sides of the decal.
With the bike standing straight up, and the fender, not the bars, straight, is it the same distance to the side of the bike on both sides?

The fender does look tilted a bit. Put it on the center and with the wheel pointed straight ahead put a level across the underside of the fender side to side.

I haven't seen one large frame modern Vespa that had a front fender that was straight and centered on the wheel and leg shield.

Your misalignment is accentuated by the poor application of the decal. That decal is way off the centerline of the fender.

^^^THIS^^^
The gold decal blends in with the white giving the impression that everything is off. Measure both sides and I think you'll find they are fairly spot-on. As Jess said, the fender is slightly offset for a reason, and nothing to worry about. The OCD in me HATES it, but I've learned to just look at the flowers.

I think there's several things at play here.
1- the decal is asymmetrical in the red portion
2- the gold, that's supposed to make up the difference just gets washed out on the white
3- the decal, as its whole is slightly crooked

those alone exasperate the situation.

but that fender could use a bit of adjustment. loosening of the fasteners and a jingle-jangle and snugging everybody up again should do the trick.

but really, I wouldn't even worry one bit about it. go out and ride.

The front fender is fickle and not discerning. It has no friends.

Yeah, it's crooked a little. As has been said, it will adjust usually without issue if you slacken the mounting nuts underneath the fender. It's not hard. Once you get the fender a little more aligned you'll find the decal won't look out of place anywhere near as much. Of course, if the bike is new you could ask your dealer to just re-align the fender. We did that stuff all the time on a range of differing bikes and scooters and it's a non issue taking just 10-15mins. Worth a go don't you think and you lose that "crooked brain worm" making you feel much better.

Specify, head rubber hammer.

You should see the engine covers of Fiat cars, there is no straight or symmetrical one.
Mine has the front hood coming out of the shape of almost an inch, it looks like a lip that is expressing perplexity.
But hardly anyone pays any attention to it, in reality if this were not the case for a Fiat it would not be normal.
This way of doing things is very Italian.

Of course ... nothing is completely perfect, if we go through everything, sooner or later we will find something wrong ... and then? Then the worm gnaws at the brain and we no longer enjoy our things.
If you can fix it a little (without making things worse) you can, otherwise you laugh at it and think it's a feature of the product.
In my opinion, only if you put the sticker straight things change for the better.

Hey, thanks for the replies everyone. I'm away for the weekend but I'll try some of these things when I get back.

I had already tried to [gently] manhandle the fender into a more centered position, but it's definitely tightly secured—so maybe if I loosen and re-tighten those bolts, as suggested, it could help a little.

But I do agree that it's probably the crooked decal that's my biggest issue here. Definitely annoying for my also mildly OCD brain.

Is there a recommended way to lift and reseat decals? I've heard that heating it up with a hairdryer could work, but maybe you all have other ideas about that—luckily it looks like the only crooked part is below the fender crest at the nose of the bike, so I don't think I should have to remove the crest in order to straighten it out.

The hairdryer is in fact the general way to get decals off. However, I doubt you'll get it to re-adhere very well after that. You might having to remove it altogether or apply a facsimile.

I know the feeling you describe all too well. Over time, I've found that — for me — the best solution to these kinds of things is just to leave them as-is and accept them as a quirk that makes your particular scoot unique. The quest for perfection is never-ending as there will always be something that isn't quite 100%.

Looking at the front view of your scoot, that ever-so-slightly crooked line creates an illusion of movement and acceleration to me — a nice, subtle arc. Couple that with the fact that the decal is purposely not completely symmetrical and I think it's a nice little quirk.

The skew decal is probably due to the political leanings of the person who applied it.
It looks worst when you have a front tyre with a clearly visible centre line.

If it is still under warranty I would complain.
If not, then just remember that no woman has two identical breasts,
yet that asymmetry does not detract from our enjoyment of the whole package.
