Hi guys, new to vespas here. I've had a 1979 Vespa 50 special in the shed for years. Pulled it out and want to get it goin for a grocery getter. Can anyone just throw a little knowledge my way and explain what maybe mines called in Vespa lingo? Trying to look up parts I need and I keep see vbb/vba/gs and a whole bunch of suffixes. Clicked on Vespa 50s for parts and I was way off. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Apologize in advice for the noob questions

Wideframe
Largeframe
Smallframe

Those are the three platforms. Your Vespa 50 is a Smallframe. It is most likely a V5B, check the VIN on our chassis, should be on the chassis adjacent the door for the motor.

Hope that helps.

Obviously I need a headlight so I'm trying to figure out what ones will fit. Also trying to figure out the indicator lights on top there and how to fix. I'm goin to start going through the motor here next week and get it running. Any simple mods I can do to get little more speed/power out of it that I should do while I'm going through it?

Headlight: https://www.scootermercato.com/Scooter-Parts/Headlight-Assemblies/114435

Really depends on what you think of as "simple" and how much money you want to spend.

not simple. . but i would:
DR102 cylinder.

Just not a lot you can do running that 50cc cylinder. ideally, you would also changed out the gearing to 24/72 gearbox and a 19mm carb.

Cool cool.

I'm up in LA

Happy to help in any way I can.

The biggest question is where do you wanna go with the bike?

Just make it a runner?
Rebuild/refresh as bone stock?Mild performance?
Get wild with it?

First, though, confirm what you've got off the Vin and engine number.

You can get ANYTHING for a smallie as long as you wanna splash the cash.

But there's lots of used stuff kicking around as people upgrade and just shelf their take offs

How deep do you wanna go?
I have the same bike, even the same color, but a 1980. Damn 3 speed, right? It was much like yours when I got it.

Look here https://modernvespa.com/forum/post2332692#2332692

and here https://modernvespa.com/forum/post2357219#2357219

If fact browse the whole thread and it will answer a lot of your questions.
My choice here if you have the itch and got the scratch would be a 4 speed gearset, 90/100 primary gears, a stock 125 crank and top end (or 133 kit), swap your Dellorto SHB16.16 carb and manifold for a SHB19.19 setup and a decent pipe. Of course you can go further, but this will put a big grin on your face.

Yeah, for now just trying to make it a runner with some mild mods. Would be interested in any parts you'd have. First Vespa I've done. Been down the road of crazy mods long ago on the moped end and know what comes with that or lack of(dependability).

Thanks voodoo I'll definitely do some reading tonight. Sounds just like what I'm looking for. What's the speed you can maintain with your setup? Not sure what to expect.

a DR 130 with a 19 and a polini kidney bean pipe with a 4spd box will give you an honest 55mph all day and be totally rideable and reliable.

Hi guys, ok I've read through a lot of the links from you voodoo. Thank you, learned alot. So I'd like to get this scoot running first & work out the kinks from sitting for who knows how long( about a decade in my possession). Then I'd like to probably kit/carb/pipe it as I'd like to maintain a decent speed here( in city) and not constantly feel like a game of frogger dodging traffic. I'm always up for the used circuit of things as Im not locked into a specific idea and I'm going weathered/used look on it as I'd like to use the bike and not be bummed with a scratch etc from use. Greasy If you have some time and are willing to show/talk about what you have I'd be more than interested.
I'm going to start a new build thread on the bike. It'll be under "the green hornet lives again". So if anyone's interested/willing to lend some advice to get this scoot back in the road just take a look on the new post.
