While Melody awaits those essential needed parts, the reasons become more starkly prominent.

Ugh. Simply, ugh.

Ah, if only the funds were quickly at hand. Alas, they aren't. Furthermore, my spies inform me that even if I had the bucks to grab another ride,, it would take quite a while to get the thing legally on the road, for the same reasons Melody is stuck in service-bay Purgatory. And, now that I think of it: what happens if my new-to-me ride comes with its own rude little "surprise" requiring service? About the only guarantee of avoiding this is buying new, and that's totally off the table, at least for this year. (Used from a dealer? My dealer wishes they had a used ride to sell me...they've got their hands full trying to get new inventory...for the same goddamn reasons.

Apparently, that would make way too much sense (and besides, "logistics" doesn't work like that, at least not exclusively). If I'm not mistaken, Piaggio's main distribution hub is Out There, rather than Over Here (kindly correct me if I'm off-base here). And, of course, not every component in my bike has its origins in Pontadera, even if the bike itself came from there, so there's that.

I was speaking with my cousin who has product manufactured in China and shipped here for sale. He was expecting his best year ever based on orders - until the current shipping bottleneck. His product is finished and sitting in China and will likely not get here in time for Christmas sales season. He noted that there are couple more factors affecting shipping in addition to the snag noted by amateriat:

Worldwide container shortage - containers are empty sitting in ports around the world. World supply chain issues have not yet caught up with goods and/or materials to be shipped back to China. It is not cost effective to send them back to China empty. This has driven his cost of a container from about $4,000 to over $24,000 and even at the higher price no guarantee as to schedule.

Closure of a major port in China on several occasions - COVID related but also may be geopolitically motivated as well.

Here is an interesting article. My cousin's cost experience is slightly different as stated above:

https://www.wsj.com/articles/covid-19-closure-at-chinas-ningbo-port-is-latest-snarl-in-global-supply-chains-11629451800

This will straighten out but it will take time. And like many things, it will get worse before it gets better.

It must have gotten worse recently. My latest scooter was manufactured in January but found its way here in the beginning of April. Although, I originally ordered it in blue only to be told a few days later they were out of stock so I took it in red instead. A seat replacement under warranty for a slight tear is somewhere between here and China. I have been waiting for that for three months.
