My just over 1 year old 300 had a dodgy battery that wouldn't hold its charge. Got it replaced a couple of months ago (annoyingly the warranty for batteries is only 6 months). However, this morning, tried to start it up after 3 days in the garage - no dice.

Tried jump starting it - pointless - bike dies as soon as the cables come off. I've just charged it fully so will see - however, what are the most common causes of battery run downs? The seat was closed so I don't think it was the light (the light switch is working properly). Might I have a short circuit somewhere? Unfortunately, the local dealership can't take the bike in for another month!!

On the cusp of going over to two wheels.

Check the battery terminals for "green death" a.k.a. corrossion.

This will cause battery drain even if the rest of your electical system is OK.

Remove the battery cables and using a wire brush clean the battery terminals and cables. Then apply some battery grease or even vaseline to keep moisture at bay.

I don't have a wiring diagram for the 300 HPE, but assuming it's the same as the other MP3s, there is a 30A fuse between the regulator and the battery. On the 500 at least, this fuse is attached to the starter relay and known as the 'hidden' fuse - I have no idea if it's in the same location on the 300. If it is, this is a common cause of battery failure.

Discharged over a 48 hr period after I charged it fully on Friday night. Battery terminals not corroded. If the fuse is a common cause of issues, is that due to the fuse being blown and needing replacing?

Have you had the battery load tested? If one of the 6 cells is bad, the battery is a goner.

Also, what type of charger are using? Motorcycle batteries require a very low Amp rate. Charging at more than 10% of the rated Ah will cook the battery. Most cheapo car chargers run at about 5-10Amp, which is 5-10X more than what the motorcycle battery can swallow.

I have a similar issue -- i had a separate thread on that.
A week of the scooter being unused and the battery dies.

This is a new motobatt battery, replacing the original yuasa after c 2 yrs.

The vehicle had a datatool tracker fitted by the previous owner that I am no longer subscribing for. I called the company up to deactivate it, to prevent 'pings' eating up thebattery. They said they did, but it didn't really change anything.

When I charge the battery up and then put it back in, things are good, except if i stop for 4-5 days, and then we are back to square 1.

For what its worth, the previous owner has removed the under seat bulb - so that isn't the culprit.

Measure the parasitic current with a meter between the negative terminal and chassis.

Now remove fuses one by one - you'll soon find the culprit. And completely disconnect that datatool tracker...

What are you using to charge the Motobatt? It's an AGM battery, so needs to be charged at ~14.7V current limited to 2A. When the current eventually tends to zero, a float charge of 13.6V is beneficial.

A Battery Tender Junior won't cut it, I'm afraid, especially if the Motobatt has been nearly or fully discharged.

^Exactly. You need a better & smarter charger like a Optimate 4 that monitors the battery every 30 minutes and conditions the battery continually to keep it in top shape.

Just by way of follow up - bike still at shop awaiting parts from Italy. It wasn't the relay so they've ordered a new wiring loom. This on a one year old bike with 2000 miles on it. Getting a little fed up and am looking at going Japanese (Rebel 500).

My bike has now been in the shop since October 27th. It is now 2.5 months hence. The part (wiring loom) is in. It has been in since December. They just need to fit it. It is under warranty. Does anyone familiar with Piaggio warranties know what my rights are? If I am entitled to a refund, I would take it and buy a different brand. I have had it.

You mean a full refund of your purchase price???

If you're in Europe, that is pretty much a big no. AFAIK there is no such thing as a lemon law in Europe as we do in the US. Neither are very agressive attorneys.

BTW, you DO meet the nicest people on a Honda. I just bought one. The Piaggio is getting a For Sale sign as soon as riding season starts. It'll be nice to have a real bike again with more than 1000cc displacement and a tank that can go 300 miles/500 km between fillups.

Piaggio has never been a textbook model nor a leading light when it comes to customer service and/or honoring warranties. These guys could learn a few pointers from the Japanese like Ferrari did when Honda brought out the NSX 30+ years ago or when Lexus showed Mercedes and BMW they can build a better and far more reliable car for half the price.

It's almost always a bad and painful experience when you have a less than half honest manufacturer backed up by a network of half honest dealers. I consider Piaggio the butcher dentist who performs his job begrudgingly and without administering novocaine to the patient.

Example: When my MP3 was due for its 1st rear tire replacement, I went to the local dealer and inquired how much it would be just to mount a new tire supplied by me on a loose rim. A easy 5 minute job, 10 minutes in the hands of an amateur for which I was willing to pay a reasonable fee. The easiest 20 Euro he'll ever make in 5 minutes.

He wasn't willing to do the job because he wanted to do the whole job from start to finish at a cost of around 230 Euro all in including him supplying a new tire, claiming he only uses "genuine Piaggo parts" to which I replied "So I take it by your logic the new Michelin tire is also made by Piaggio then?".

The guy (owner of the dealership) gave me this strange look and told me "When you go to a steakhouse, do you bring your own steak?". I told him "No, but I sure as hell will bring my own wine."

I left that dealership, and vowed never to step into another Piaggio dealership and buy one of their products. Been doing all my own maintenance since that fateful day.

Anyway, I just bought a Honda motorbike and am looking forward to picking it up next weekend. It was a pleasurable experience, just like when I bought my Honda Accord about 5 years ago. And the new bike has a ultra low maintenance schedule on the same level as a lawnmower. No more belt changes every 6K mi/10K km. No more removing the rear wheel to do a brake fluid flush or replacing pads. Fitting a new rear tire is a easy 4 step process without the need to disassemble the rear ass of the bike. Brake fluid flushes are a doddle among many other benefits. And parts are cheap as chips, and available on just about every corner let alone online. None of this "we only work on Vespas and not Piaggios" bullcrap. And the assurance the bike will have been properly assembled and have zero electrical gremlins, something that cannot be said of Vincenzo and Co. (Piaggio).

Piaggio is just a boutique brand that is overly reliant on their boutique and overpriced GTS girlie bike.
