Modern Vespa

I've run 250 s & 350s for most of my riding life. Enough performance and still cheap to run. Insurance in Ontario is based on engine size and it goes through the roof on larger bikes, especially sporting stuff which can have a surcharge of up to 100%. So a tuned 250 roadster can be something of a bargain thriller!

Me too! Mine was a '68 Bug that was a good little runner. My friend had a sweet red squareback I lusted after. My family used to be huge VW lovers, with my Uncle having 4 or 5 beautifully restored type 2s and his boys, suped-up bugs.

My fastback was a great little car when running, but it was blessed with Bosch's first generation solid state electronic ignition which a too complicated to ever work properly.

VW issued a kit to correct its many flaws. It consisted of a lovely manifold set and two downdraft Weber carbs. Too bad I couldn't afford it!

My '78 bus ran great. They must have worked the kinks out by then.

actually, by 78 I believe they had dumped the original system and put the mechanical system in place pretty much everywhere. My buddy had it on his two mid seventies Volvos and I had it on my 81 SAAB 900, by then it was truly bulletproof as long as nobody screwed with it.

the original electronic system from the early seventies is truly the work of Satin. I have a friend who has it in a 72 350SL Benz and its starting to be really entertaining to keep that thing running.

Not gonna lie: If someone favorably compared me to a Vespa, aesthetically or otherwise, I'd probably be pretty flattered. I will admit to being a bit biased, though.

The Karmann Ghia was a car that for the line was the most "Italian style" of German cars, on the other hand the Ghia design contributed a lot.

I may be biased, but rarely has there been a car with a prettier backside.

I know that I'm abrasive and whatnot. the dr. mrs. the greasy has been working on me to edit my language appropriately. which, in years of working in shops is difficult not to fire off very crude insults.

I'm now learning to choose my words a little more carefully, especially the important ones. but I'll still drop a fuck you too on any person.

I know that I'm a ridiculous person. I've been told as much. but the second I got in and grabbed the wheel I knew deep down that we'd be together for a long, long time. granted, I had owned other cars by then, and definitely some cool shit. and definitely faster. and nicer. but this was it. and I knew the moment I got in.

besides this one, there's only a very small handful of others that I've lusted after. nothing exotic. nothing flashy.

I've built, sold and crashed enough of them. but that bucket list remains.

It is clear that you are a typical American of the early 70s class, by definition the best period of the pre-motor age before the oil crisis of those years. This is the reason for the love for Lambretta and the choice to be a mechanic. Too bad that in Italy we could not be / have a human-machine identification through vehicles like yours ... Our little two-four-wheeled boxes weren't exactly an extrusion of our personality, especially for mechanics enthusiasts like me, forced even from unfavorable economic situations.

To this day I miss that car. Got t-boned by a kid in a Suburban. He hit me in the passenger side, pushed me into the car in the other lane and that car up onto the sidewalk.

If I hadn't been broke and living in an apartment, that 383 with the 727 Torqueflite would have been boxed up in my Dad's barn for a future car. Sadly, it was a total loss and I had to scrape money together just to get my stuff out of it from impound.

I could ride around all day long in that car, sunglasses on, listening to Mancini's "Peter Gunn" and just know I was the coolest cat on the street.

That's back when cars had trunks and straight lines.....

Ha! I had a 71 with a 383/727

Wound up t-boning a SL500 on my way to meet my folks for dinner. Guy ran the light and I tore the thing in twain. Still rolled to dinner and pulling up at the valet in a busted up smoking shit box was hilarious.

Ran it back home and a trip to the junkyard and she was good as new. Probably better, because I dropped in a new cam while the radiator was out and a Weiand intake while everything was apart.

The story behind it was weird. I think I've told this already, but I'll do it again. I was on car #3 delivering pizzas in Florida. A 1980 Ford Fiesta. The water pump went. I knew a mechanic and he told me I either had to drop the engine to change it or cut a hole in the front fender an pop-rivet it back in place when it was done. OR ... an older guy had dropped off this car and died while it was in for service. None of the family wanted the car, so for the Fiesta and $300 I could have it.

I swear I could have put the Fiesta in the trunk of that Chrysler.
