I had a 1969 Chrysler Newport. Talk about junk in the trunk…To this day I miss that car… I could ride around all day long in that car, sunglasses on, listening to Mancini's "Peter Gunn" and just know I was the coolest cat on the street.
Looked it over and all that was wrong was someone had stolen the starter and the radio. My girlfriend (now Mrs. CLE) and I spent a weekend filling trashbags and cleaning upholstery. Using a week's salary I bought a rebuilt starter and if fired right up. We parked the Beetle because we had a Caddy!
Like the Newports described before, it sat four across. The trunk would sleep six comfortably. It floated more than drove. In a world of 55MPH freeways, it just wanted to cruise at 75MPH. We didn't listen to Peter Gunn - in fact we didn't listen to anything. Even a junkyard WonderBar was too expensive for my budget. So we sang (mostly Beatles).
Then reality sunk in. It had the small engine that Caddy offered that year - a 472. 12 miles per gallon in the city, 8 highway. My gas bill was more than my rent and I certainly was not saving anything for next year's tuition.
At the end of summer, I signed the title back over to the landlady and took the trusty beetle back to school.
Yeah, I wish it was in my stable now…
Chris from CLE
