I took my 2013 Vespa GTS300 Super out for a run today. I needed to
go on the Freeway to look at some new Townhouses. I was running at
about 65 miles per hour and the check engine light went on. It also seemed
to hesitate slightly only once when the light went on

Note, I immediately exited the freeway. At lower speeds the light went
off. I kept thinking, just get me home scooter. It did flash on a bit but
stayed off all the way back home. Further, no increase in temperature.
I was running home between 30 and 40 miles without the light.

What say you oh Vespa technical types? I had the oil changed with new
tires recently. I probably need to get it in to the dealer. Do you think
it is wise to drive it to the dealer? Never had this problem. The scoot
has only about 7800 miles on it. Driven very little this year.

One thing you could check- It could be a bad voltage regulator. In my case high rpm made the check engine light go on and off at lower rpm. Easy to check with a volt meter at the battery to see if the charging volts don't exceed 14.5 at higher rpm's.

Cosmos,

You are brilliant. I recently replaced the battery. It would not fit - wrong battery.
I called them back and they switched it out. Maybe it is still the wrong battery and
over charging the system.

I will check it out with my actual Vespa dealer today.

I love this forum.

undo the gas cap, and put it back on gently with a light fit, dont screw it on tight. ive had this problem many times, its common with gts apparently. too tight gas caps messes with sensors back there or something.

Could it be bad gas Bob? If the bike hasn't been used much this year you may have some settled out fuel additives at the bottom of the tank that got sucked through. This tends to be slightly sticky and can interfere with the injector tip altering the spray pattern resulting in a change to the way the engine runs. Top off with new gas and some seafoam normally sorts it out.

Stromrider, Hummus2, Cosmos,

All you guys are amazing. I am dumping the GTS300 on my local Vespa Dealer.
I will provide the service manager with all of your input.

Here is why. When I brought the Vespa GTS300 Super home from the dealer it
was immediately over heating. This ModernVespa forum cracked the case instantly.
It was a faulty factory installation of the gasket on the water pump. Bazinga - Wow!

Any other input is appreciated. I will advice of the outcome at the dealer.

Vespa quality note: This engine light thing is the only thing that has gone wrong
in 8 years since the factory gasket quick fix.

I doubt that it's "over charging" the system, but a new battery may not be fully charged and the ECU is reading a low voltage. Have you tried putting a battery tender on it?

Kraig,

Thanks for the advise. I did not put the charger on it. Leo's South fully charged it
(they said) prior to my picking it up. Anyway, it is in the hands of Scooterville.

I will know soon.

Thanks,

Bob Copeland

Scooterville to the Rescue

It was all related to the wrong battery. The dealer where I take my
Suzuki Burgman 400 (Always have done an excellent job on service)
picked the wrong battery.

Lesson learned:

1. Use the actually local Vespa Dealer.
2. Read the battery number off the correct battery you are replacing for the reorder.
Do not allow them to look it up.

The service manager at Scooterville did say the 2013 GTS300 Super had a battery
change over that may have been unique enough to screw up my Burgman dealer.
