You would think that having owned 3 MP3s, I would know the answer to this and I probably would have when I was 60. But now, my memory is failing. When you check the oil level, do you screw in the dipstick or just set it on top of the filler hose?

Thanks!

Marty

4 steps.

1) Bike must be on solid level ground

2) Bike must be on its centre stand (not supporting itself only with tilt lock)

3) Engine must be fully warmed up, and a couple of minutes allowed for oil to return to sump

4) Unscrew stick, wipe clean, reinsert/fully screw back in, take reading

2 questions:

1) Where did you read that?
2) For what?

As a auto mechanic, you always want to check with oil hot to allow oil to get to all vital places and to allow gasoline or other substances to burn off

Being an auto mechanic doesn't mean anything in relation to the correct answer.

Piaggio clearly states that you should check it cold, or if it was hot wait at least 10 minutes to obtain an accurate reading.

Now, some car manufacturers do make dipsticks that take into account checking oil levels when hot but unfortunately Piaggio isn't one of them.

The Piaggio Owner's Manual say check it cold, on a center stand, and check it before riding by unscrewing the dipstick and reading it. That, to me, means it is being checked screwed in. My Honda scooters are the opposite, checked by unscrewing, wiping, dipping but not screwing in. I like that more because it's not so tedious, but with my Piaggio I screw it in.

so after you check the oil and you like the level, now just do the same as your honda and dip it in and not screw it all the way in . NOTE that level and from now on just dip it in and you can tell if its low.

Checked my Silverado's dipstick when I got home after paying my Chevy dealer for an oil change.
I called the service desk back, "Why is my oil level showing 1 and 1/2 inches above the full mark?!"
Service Desk: " you run the engine, shut it off and within 15 seconds check the dipstick. Wait any longer it will drain back and show incorrect level."

When I stopped laughing and shooting coffee out my nose - I looked at the service receipt.
They put 6 Qts in a 4 Qt engine.

O.S.

Came from this (the vehicle in the picture looks a lot like my MP3 500; perhaps I'm assuming too much....):

There seems to be alot of confusion about how to check the engine oil, dipstick screwed in or sitting on top ? Quote from my 2008 fuoco riders handbook = check should be made on engine oil level when the engine is cold ( after completely unscrewing the oilcap/dipstick).

its copy past out of the older atlantic, Bev, X9 (2 wheeled) owners manual

The mp3 engine is sitting almost level when its on the lock and the rearwheel is tilting down on the centrestand so if you check on a new mp3 on the centrestand it will show low oil from factory

Most of the 2 wheel versions also use the upper engine mounts and sitting level on the centrestand , and thats also why you cant use a older twinspark Bev engine on a mp3 they dont have the lower mounting rings for the swingarm
