On Monday 11 October I am hospitalized and on Tuesday I have the operation to put the prosthesis on my left hip, send me good wishes!
I am excited and at the same time I am pissing myself with fear. I'll never get used to going under the surgeon's knife!

Get yourself a black Sharpie pen on Sunday. Write on your upper right thigh "Not this one".

Wish you all the best, Attila! I am coming up on 2 1/2 years since a total hip replacement, and it has made a real difference in my quality of life. Go after the physical therapy with gusto. Keep us posted.

I know this has been a long time coming for you, and I'm pleased to see that you are ready to take this on.

Nobody gets used to going under the knife. You will be fine & the timing is great, you can recuperate staying warm for the next few months. I know a few neighbors who have had this replacement or a knee replacement and all swear that doing the physical therapy is key to full recovery.
Sending you good clean energies.

Best of luck! I had a full shoulder replacement three weeks ago and have been busting my butt at PT so I can ride again next month. Because of PT, it looks like that might actually happen. Do the PT and you'll be fine.

My father just had this done in May. He was a month not walking, so it was a little tedious, but he's much better for going through it. He walks noticeably better now. He's 81.

Hoping the best for you. Keep us posted.

I've had a few friends have this done and my wife will need both done in the future.

These days its "day surgery" and nothing to worry about, likely far lower risk that riding in Rome traffic.

My Dad had his done at 81 and was up and walking the next day, home the day after that and tossed the stroller and cane away within a week.

I wish you all the best with this, have a speedy recovery.

Good luck Attila. Sending you good wishes and nice thoughts for your op. These things usually go very well and I too know lots of people that have had this surgery done very successfully. Let us all know when it's over and the rehab begins. Bye for now!

Well I didn't have any thing replaced but did get right shoulder worked on back the first of June. Same operation and doctor as when it was done in 2010, tried for warranty but was told I was one year too late!

I just finished the supervised PT and now am on my own to keep working on it. Did they give you any exercises to do before? I did not have any but noticed that at the PT place there were many getting PT before knee surgeries.

From what I saw of those who had that operation the worst part might be the stretching to get range of motion back to normal. Did not look or sound fun. I kind of felt bad as the best part of the PT for my shoulder was when the therapist took my arm and did the stretching, did not hurt that she was an attractive young lady!

Best of luck and let us know as soon as possible after, even better if you try posting while still under the pain meds!

Godspeed. And yes... don't cheat on your PT... it will make all the difference. (Reference on PT was recovery from a fractured c6 in 2005 or so. I made friends with a patient who was struggling through a *second* round of PT from hip replacement bc he didn't take the at home excersise seriously enough the first time.)

Physiotherapy helps but can be a real chore at times. I'm still doing it since my accident and it really has helped.

Yeah, surgery always sucks! At least hip replacements seem to be something humans have gotten pretty good at doing, as far as modern medicine goes. Here's hoping you have a quick recovery with minimal pain.

Thank you all.
To help me at home, I rearranged my old exercise bike and bought a magnetic treadmill for walking around the house when it's too cold or raining.
This is the best time to do this here, the weather is perturbed but little and the temperatures are still good.

My you have the best results possible, Attila !

When you are interviewed by the anaesthetist before your surgery,
remind them that their principal function is not to put you to sleep,
but rather to wake you up again after the surgery.
Just so they remember...!

I am a contra-indicator, though with a scoped knee. Doctor asked about PT, I said nah, I got it. The knee still hurts on regular occasions.

When a Mercedes cracked my collar bone, I was all over PT. I worked hard at it and now have greater range of motion in the left shoulder.

DO YOUR PT!

Yes to the replacement and Yes to that PT stuff. And I have a recumbent exercise bike that my legs get 10 minutes every morning so I can keep that right leg working and knee bending. It also gets used some evenings after work when I hurt and have some swelling issues, slow peddling helps my old legs move that blood better and actually reduces the pain and swelling some before bedtime so I sleep better. So, you figure what helps you and make it part of your routine so you can keep riding too!

I need my left knee replaced first...
Then, when my medical scheme has recovered, my right one.

My left hip is occasionally painful from a spill I had riding my 1200GS over Naude's Nek Pass eight years ago.

Latest news...
Tomorrow morning (Friday) at 7.30 I do the pre-hospitalization visits, Sunday morning I go to have the covid swab which is required even if you have received the vaccine and on Tuesday morning they hospitalize me and operate immediately.
Five days (and if there aren't complications) they discharged me (my body) to go to PT (so say by you) in an external rehabilitation center, in my city.

Five days in the hospital? Here in the states, insurance companies want you out of your bed the same day and out of the hospital in a day or two. After my spinal fusion surgery last year, they had me walking the same day and out of the hospital the next day. I rehabbed at home, and PT was at an outpatient PT facility.

I had both of mine done this year: left hip in March, right hip in August. The nice thing is that because the damaged joint is gone, the relief is immediate. I'm surprised by the 5 day stay, too. For my last surgery, I was the doctor's first patient. I went in early, was taken to operating room about 7.30, woke up around two hours later. They had me up and walking by noon and sent me home about 14.00. (An aside about how things have changed: I had my appendix removed in 1964 at age 17 and they kept me overnight. The scar is almost as long as this one.) The limiting factor for me has been my abysmal physical condition: between covid lockdowns and limited mobility, I've mostly been sitting for the last couple of years. It's been almost 2 months and though I've been walking without support for a few weeks, I still can't do much more than a km before I run out of steam.

Good luck next week.
