In the words of the American philosopher Tom Petty: "The waiting is the hardest part." You are in the queue, with time to think about the upcoming surgery. Keep yourself busy. Since you will be in the hospital a number of days, consider downloading music to help you through the first couple days after the surgery... I am an old rock 'n roller, but I found "sleep music" to be especially soothing after my last two surgeries (hip replacement, then cancer surgery), with a bluetooth headband with flat speakers so there were no wires to deal with.

If your hip replacement goes as mine did, they will want to get you up and moving, at least a little, as soon as possible. Keep in mind that every recovery will be different, so don't compare yourself to others. Do as much as you can, then do a little more. Keep your mind in a positive place: anticipate getting back on your scoot (that worked for me).

The anesthesia and pain meds do a number on your bowels - moving around will be helpful to "get things moving" again. Use whatever aid (walker, cane, etc) you need, with the goal being to move beyond that as you can. When people tell you how long it took them or someone they know to meet any goal (walk without a cane, run a marathon), do NOT consider that to be your goal. It will take whatever time it takes. You have waited a long time for this, and you are about to be "hip-deep" in this next chapter. Things will be better on the other side.

Know that you have plenty of scooter folks here cheering for you on each step.

Best wishes,
Jim

Best of luck!

Had a total hip replacement 2.5 years ago after an accident in the garden age 67. First time ever in hospital so first surgery ever, scary stuff. Fantastic result, they have it down to a fine art nowadays.

You'll be back on the Vespa before you know it!

The "bowels" issue is no joke. After my first spinal surgery, I couldn't do #2 for almost two weeks. I had severe abdominal pain. I took all kinds of constipation medications, but nothing worked. I finally went to the bathroom after drinking a bottle of citrate of magnesia. It was disgusting. For my most recent shoulder replacement surgery, on the advice of the doctor, I started taking stool softeners a few days before my surgery. I continued taking them after my surgery until I "went" a couple days later. Easy peazy.

Five days in the hospital? Here in the states, insurance companies want you out of your bed the same day and out of the hospital in a day or two.
It's not the insurance companies. Hospitals are not good places to recover. Patients tend to stay in bed, in an unfamiliar ward, surrounded by infection risks. Getting people home asap is good for all involved.

A bit OT but I think the trick is to get two shots one in either arm so the polarities balance each other out!

Attila is in a convent hospital and Mother Superior is visiting to have the account settled.
MS - Have you got cash?
A - No
MS - What about credit card?
A - No
MS - Well, what have you got?
A - Err, I've got a sister. She's a nun. She's a spinster.
MS - Nuns are not spinsters as we are married to god.
A - O.k, then sent the bill to my brother in law.

It is a public health hospital and in more than one big city (Rome), many people ...
But the problem was that I have problems with venous insufficiency in the legs, so a vascular team must also be present at the intervention for a possible emergency; this was only discovered during pre-hospitalization and therefore resulted in a delay in being able to assemble the additional team.

But what I am wondering and asking at the forum is: is there any orthopedic or vascular doctor in the forum?
Is it possible that given the spread of the Vespa there is no doctor present among us?

I confirm, the move posticip of a week is due to the prudence of the doctors because of my venous problems in the lower limbs; they are also gathering a vascular team to be ready in case of an emergency during the operation.
It is for this reason that I have chosen to be admitted to a large university polyclinic, they have more specializations and experience.
If this gives me more security, I will wait again.

yes because your gait will have changed. You will have one new hip and one old one. Together with two old knees. You have to train yourself to walk again.

I have a few friends with new hips. All will be OK

The left knee has already been operated on thirty-two years ago due to a car accident, I have the tibial plateau with two large screws and the ligaments are in gore-tex. To avoid problems due to the gait of the defective hip, I had infiltrations (injections) of a shock-absorbing liquid made specifically for these cases.

I took the day off work (a Wednesday) to bring my father to the hospital for his surgery. It was scheduled for 8:00am. We were there at 6:30 for prep.

Just before 8:00 they postponed until 9:30. Dad's pelvis was numbed and he was sedated. 9:25 rolled around and they came in, terribly apologetic, and rescheduled for that Friday. Facepalm emoticon

The surgeon's kids were sick and she didn't want to take a chance that she'd have to leave surgery to throw up in a bucket.

I suppose as excuses go it was as good as any.

So sorry to hear this - when you've got your head into it, the delay just extends the angst. Keep your spirits up; think good thoughts of riding... and dancing in the moonlight.

That worked for me: I told my wife (before the hip surgery) about the thoughts of dancing in the moonlight. She said, "With some sexy young thing?"

I said, "I don't want some sexy young thing, Honey, I want you."

The resulting fight made the hip replacement seem easy by comparison. Yes, it's a joke. Doing what I can to give you a laugh.

Take care.

You can 'bank' your own blood but this must be done many weeks before surgery.
In the meantime, you can prepare the new hip with a coating of ACF-50.

Again, fingers crossed mighty-tightly for your procedure and untroubled recovery, Atilla. Le Wife, who herself is something of a joint-replacement superfecta (hips, shoulders, knees) fully groks what you're dealing with, but also knows the good stuff that can come afterwards.

OK, I have been subjected to other vascular tests due to my venous circulation problems in my legs; if the analyzes are sufficient we will proceed to do the surgery next Tuesday, otherwise I will have to do a little fluidifying treatment. So they told me.

Fourth attempt ...
Today I did the pre-operative covid swab; if they don't think about it on Monday, Tuesday morning 09th of this month, they'll give me a new hip.
I asked what material it was made of ...
I was told they were deciding at the time, however titanium alloy or composite, hopefully not with the Vespa tin.
