Modern Vespa

Hey all,

I was 300ish miles into my 2nd Iron Butt SaddleSore 1000 this weekend when my odo stopped counting. Speedometer still works fine, but not counting miles any longer.

Everything I could find on MV showed if one goes, they both go and I would need to replace the cable between the two. Is that still what I need to do or do you have any other ideas?

The cable is good if the speedo works. You may need a new instrument assembly unless you can replace the odo.

There's something jamming the 10,000 mile dial. I'd try a local or not so local instrument specialist. Not musical.

Yep, cable's fine. I'm guessing one of the little geary things in the 10000's place isn't lined up right with the previous gear. It would have to be replaced.

I don't know if the speedo is a sealed unit, but it might be worth removing it from your scooter and taking it to a clock repairer who might take on the challenge.

It's probably some grit has ingressed into the odo tumblers. One thing you can do if that is the case is remove the speedo from the headset and gently tap the speedo unit from different angles. Gently shake it. This has fixed many speedos over the years without having to strip it down. You can then just pop it back to see if it's worked. However, it could be something more serious which may cost you money.

Or smack it on the side with an open palm or a mallet.

This problem begs the question:
Why did Vespa replace the electronic odometer in my two older 250 GTSes with a less modern, less reliable, mechanical one? Cost or aesthetics?

In Italy, they know it's going to break, so they make it easy to fix. In Germany they design it so that if you follow the maintenance schedule, it will run forever, and in Japan they make it so it doesn't break before you want a new one. Hit it repeatedly until it moves. You are either going to knock it back into alignment or it will still be broken.

Couldn't get it fixed by myself. Just dropped it off at Moxie Scooters here in DFW. Those guys have been good to me—hoping they can find a good (cheap) solution.

Update: I was told the entire instrument cluster would need to be replaced. Apparently the entire odometer gear assembly broke apart. Bummer.

Question, anyone know if it's possible to put the Super Tech set up on a '12 GTS Super?

Nice but there is no Vespa logo.

If it is just a gear, it could easily be 3D printed. My son made a speedo gear for my DR350 that works between the front wheel hub and the worm gear that turns the cable for pennies.
