I just replaced the 55 year old grips on my Allstate. I did a lot of research and watched videos using grip glue and an air compressor. Seemed like a lot of effort. So, I would like to propose a very easy yet very effective process:

1. Using a razor knife, cut the old grip down to handlebar and then all the way lengthwise.
2. Using a screw driver pry the old grip apart and remove.
3. Soak a small rag in acetone (acetone will instantly destroy any paint it touches) or WD40 and remove any old glue from the handle bar.
4. Go to your local golf or sporting good shop an buy one strip (12" length) of grip tape.
5. Apply the grip tape to the handle bars, tucking about 1/2" inside the hole at the end.
6. Apply a light coat of WD-40 to the tape. It should be very slippery now.
7. Slide the new grip on, with ease.
8. Bob's your uncle.

I just put new "regular" rubber/vinyl grips on the GL to replace the craptastic SIP grips I put on a few months ago. I heated the grips with my heat gun on a lower setting to soften them, then sprayed everything with hairspray and it worked perfectly too.

Did the WD-40 not attack the adhesive in the grip tape?

WD-40 softens the glue but evaporates in about and hour and the glue becomes glue again.

Hair spray is all that's necessary. Grip tape could become a mess later on. Hairspray is good because it keeps the grip solid, but will break loose with an air gun.
