If I have a choice between loud pipes and a stereo that makes every vehicle in a 50 foot radius vibrate, I choose loud pipes.

It may just the move the noise somewhere else.
A rest area near me was closed because doggers used it frequently. Within a month they relocated to a park used by even more people than the rest area. |

Erm, I have to be a little delicate here.
People who will meet in their cars in selected areas for the sake of casual sexual liaisons. I think the term comes from the areas where people usually walk their dogs. |

There is an ordinance being considered in my county to allow ORVs to use county roads. While I think most people are for it or don't really care there is a loud minority who are opposed to it but when you ask them why they either give "common sense", anecdotes or noise as their reasons.
One of the most vocal of them, who cannot give any actual facts as to why he opposes it, was clinging to the noise argument and says he has a right to "peaceful enjoyment of his property" (which is not the actual wording nor does it mean what he thinks it means). Anyway, it turns out he has a Harley with straight pipes which produces sound pressure over 100dbs. Someone that knows him pointed this out. He has been really quiet ever since. OK more on topic I love this idea. It sounds similar to the ShotSpotter microphones that some cities have installed. I live high on a ridge that runs steeply down to a state road and when the harley and sport bike boys and girls thunder by we sometimes have to cover our ears. |

While seated on the patio of one of our favorite restaurants, my wife and pre-teen kids and I had an experience with Harley folk loud pipes.
We were about half way thru a nice dinner and some 50 something couples came out to the street about 12 ft from the outside dining area. They proceeded to start their bikes. Very loud, straight pipes. OK with me...on the road. Start them, then hop on and go. But NO, they let the bikes warm up for about 5 minutes (felt like an hour), blipping the throttle every 2 seconds to gain attention and keep the pieces of crap running, and then slowly, after hair primping (no helmets), got on and left. The hydrocarbon output was huge. The topper for this was that, after seeing our nasty looks (but no verbal comments) the one asshole flipped us off as they rode off. We told the restaurant staff to flag them for no service. Unfortunately, this helped to solidify my prejudice regarding Harley riders. Someone prove me wrong, please.

I've always believed that there's a connection between a child banging on a drum to get attention and riders who exploit the loudness of their pipes.
It's just attention seeking in it's purest form. |
