Also the best explanation I've seen of how a scooter transmission works.

Their production team is fantastic. I've been enjoying them for years and have seen every video they've made.

Yes he's good and nearly correct on everything he does...lol.

The Burgman 650 is a great scooter, I've had two and the 400 also. The 400 is a far better machine and long term much more reliable and affordable. Both the 650's I had broke their cvt belts. One at 35,000 and one at 45,000 miles. Unusually low miles to break a belt. These were company bikes and it turned out to be due to the idiot at my company that broke in both bikes using the fast run in technique which overheats the metal belts causing them to fail early. If he'd read the owners handbook it states to stick rigorously to the factory run in instructions to ensure the belt is broken in correctly.

Anyhoo it was an 19+ hour job to replace the belt on each one at the cost of £1,600 just for parts. I did the jobs myself under the supervision of a factory trained tech the first time as I knew little of the Burgman 650 at the time, and on my own the second time. The sad part is when the belt breaks it usually takes out the bearings and pulleys. It's a huge job. If a dealer does it the cost is around £3,200. It's the main reason you see so many young Burgman 650's going to there grave early. If treated right they go for 100,000 miles but eventually they all break their belts as there is no recommended time to replace the belt so folks don't realise the danger. If anyone has one of the 650's I'd recommend replacing the belt at the 60,000 mile point. Doing it in a planned way is far cheaper and easier.

The usual silly Fortnine crap... do I ever love their stuff.

I think I"ll email them and ask why they haven't reviewed a GTS.

If you've not seen it, look up the comparison between an old Honda CB360 and the latest equivalent, both interesting and hilarious.

Maybe the problem is with the service regime ?

The Kymco AK550 belt gets changed at 12,000 miles. Probably for that very reason.

That is when the bastard thing will start.

The biggest flaw of the Burgman 650 is the excessive weight that nullifies the advantage and the feeling of being on a scooter.

Unfortunately Bill there is no service required on the cvt transmission except for an oil change. The metal belt runs dry though and has no oil bath so it's difficult to do anything to help belt life except run the bike gently to start with during running in, and don't do stupid things with the bike (like driving it flat out all the time) or keep constantly changing gears manually to jerk the bike around and stress the belt. The cvt system is quite different to your old AK550. Overall belt life can be anywhere between 50,000 miles to a more common 70-80,000 miles. If you get more than that you are doing well. Best thing is to make sure to replace the belt around the 60,000 miles mark but there is no factory recommended time to do this. All the 650 Burgmans eventually break their belts though if you don't do something to sort it. Best to do it before that happens as it's cheaper and easier to do. A very good competent diy mechanic can tackle it ok but it is complex and you need good tools. Virtually the whole bike has to be dismantled if you follow the factory workshop manual, although there is a slightly quicker way to do it if you know how but it's still a bit of a nightmare to do. Main issue is removing the gearbox from the motor and frame. It's awkward and complex. Most techs like to shy away from doing them unless they have completed the factory course on the B650. I did just three of them and that was enough for me!

As a Canadian motorcycle content creator, FortNine is the golden standard, bar none, that I look up to.

I met Ryan when I was working for Harley-Davidson Canada. Easy to talk to and get along with in person!

Hahaha, I think he was taller than me by an inch or two, but I'm only 5'11" if I slept well the night before, otherwise sinking closer to 5'10". I put Ryan at around 6 ft or 6'1".
